Start Making Sense

There's this old lady who runs the slot machines in the Smith's Grocery store next to where I work. She talks like a dude because she's probably been smoking since she was 2 years old. She knows as much about Boxing as any man I've ever met, and likes to talk the Fights, specifically how good they are for Las Vegas, as she also follows the money Boxing can draw for a State (I think she's an avid gambler.)

The first time I heard her give a diatribe of the current state of the Welterweight division, which I couldn't fine any disagreement with, I asked:

"Oh, so you're a Boxing fan?"

She immediately shot back:

"No, I"m a Sports fan."

That actually felt pretty good to hear.

i think people have this tendency to think of boxing as having this heyday when it was on network tv primetime or when tyson was so popular and think that if it's not as deeply embedded in the average middle class white person's conscious then it's off its peak.

irl i think the business model is different now and the paying fanbase isn't the same but it still makes tons of money worldwide as wel as captures tons of peoples' attention.

The guys that make this argument kill me. A lot of them repeat things they've heard Joe Rogan say about no more names but they themselves woudn't know what the hell is going on in boxing because that is their source - Joe Rogan. I have a friend that buys into all this stuff and the only boxing matches he watched in recent years were Mayweather vs Hatton, Mayweather vs Oscar, and Calzaghe vs Jones. The screwy part is though this guy is on MMA sites all day long studying all these obscure MMA fighters and telling me my sport is doomed because these three fights he watched didn't live up to the hype. If he spent 1/8 of the time following boxing he would have a much different picture of what's going on. I don't know why this sort of brand loyalty is so extreme to that crowd. Like they they share the success of MMA since they are a fan. Whatever though, just rambling at this point.
