Last night I was talking to @franklinstower and the subject of ST: TNG came up. I mentioned that I hadn't watched an episode in years but that I liked it as a kid.

After that conversation last night I decided to check out an episode of TNG to see how well the show held up. I picked an ep from a list I found called Yesterday's Enterprise. I enjoyed it well enough and thought the show actually looked pretty good in HD.

Any Star Trek fans here? Anyone watched TNG any time recently, and if so, how did you think it held up after 25 years? Also, how do you think TNG stacks up against all the other Star Trek series?

One of my favorites. I’ve watched all the way through on Netflix. Very good show

I've heard Seasons 1 and 2 kind of suck and then the show finds its groove in Season 3.

Can you confirm?

Yeah it does kinda start slow. But it gets going in season 3 and is pretty good the rest of the way. IMO.

Love this show. I very recently rewatched the last 4 seasons of it. Some episodes I hadn't seen in 20 years, so it was almost like watching them for the first time again. It's what Star Trek should be. I also recently rewatched the last 4 seasons of Deep Space 9. Enjoyed that one a lot too.

I just felt like it did a great job of developing the Star Trek universe. The original series had great stories and great characters, but it is so dated with cheap sets, cheap special effects, and bad make up. The latest Star Trek series on CBS has superior effects, but I don't like the characters, the writing, or the changes they have made to canon.

How do you feel that TNG stacks up against DS9?

It's a razor thin difference for me. Both had great characters and great writing. Many would argue that TNG had more consistently good episodes throughout it's seven seasons than DS9, but the Dominion war story arc in DS9 alone was some of the very best writing in Star Trek. I would probably give a very slight edge to DS9 just for that alone.

Interesting. I remember watching DS9 way back when it was first airing and just not really getting into it. It didn't feel like Star Trek to me.

I remember feeling like it was kind of . . . I dunno, depressing.

DS9 definitely brought that edge with the war themes, and was much more dark than any of the other series. Nonetheless, it had the sane creative leadership that TNG enjoyed so I'm not surprised it held its own. Both were great shows, but the chemistry between the characters that was developed over the course of TNG and the individual strength of each character was something special.

I know I'm in the minority, but I freaking LOVE Star Trek Voyager.

I know, I know... But it just has a hold on me.

i'm not a star trek fan really but TNG i could watch and enjoy it.

Just like TNG, DS9 took a few seasons to really break in and develop the characters. The later seasons of DS9 are better. But, even in the later seasons, they did have the occasional "soap opera" episode for character development that didn't particularly interest me.

After DS9 disappointed me I never did go any farther with the show.

What is it about Voyager that appealed to you?

ST:TNG is the Phil Baroni of Star Treks.

The fact that they're out there on their own and the possibilities are endless. No Federation, Romulans, Klingon Empire, Cardassians, etc. Yeah, it's not a Galaxy-Class ship (which is basically a self-sustaining city in space), so they pick up whatever aid they can in worlds they pass by in the Delta quadrant.

Capt. Janeway doesn't go through space with her sex-drive in one hand and a phaser in another, she had her wits and a band of rebels in her crew with one mission... Get home.

She had amazing leadership.

Sounds interesting. Maybe I'll have to check it out.

I know nothing of the premise. I always assumed that it was basically TNG with a female captain.

I think that you'll like it. It starts off meh (I think), but as it goes forward, I think you'll be pleasantly entertained.

The Krennim story arc is....

In a good way!

TNG had great thrilling and imaginative stories that weren't just phasers and photon torpedoes but slick writing, creativity and drama. Sci-fi as literature is very much engrained with philosophy and allegory and there are some episodes that are incredible for this regard. And then you have Riker giving the order to fire against the Borg in the most cliff-hanger season finale as some incredible action.

DS9 was great because it still incorporated some sci-fi elements but into a serialized epic story-telling. I loved it.
