Revisited this classic for the first time in probably 10 years the other day in fabulous 4K and it still holds up. Great performances from the entire cast. Pretty much a perfect movie except for the fact:

I didn’t think (and honestly didn’t remember) Chris’ death being given away at the very beginning. I think it would’ve been quite the impactful gut punch to leave that reveal to the end. I also felt Teddy dying in Vietnam would’ve fit his character more than just ending up being some dime a dozen jailbird loser. Especially with Chris’ line about Teddy earlier in the film: “Kid will probably be dead before he’s 20”

What a great movie

Definitely makes me nostalgic for all the dumb shit my friends and I used to get up to.

I forget exactly how Dreyfuss's character writes it in the ending scene, but it's really true that the circle of friends you have as a kid is something that can never be replicated in your adult years

Yeah Stephen King was really at his best when exploring the human condition in the real world (Stand By Me, Misery, Shawshank, The Running Man, Dolores Claiborne) as opposed to coming up with stuff about whatever kind of monster. Even Carrie, It, The Shining, Ghosts of Atlantis etc. all have their strengths in the human trials and tribulations (high school bullying, abuse at home, coming of age) and the supernatural stuff just provides a different way of telling those stories. He really gets mischaracterized as a horror / monster writer.

It’s truly a fantastic quote:

“I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was 12. Jesus, does anyone?”

Its very similar to Andy Bernard’s quote from The Office:

“I wish there was a way to know you were in the good old days before you’ve actually left them.”

Great movie, but I never understood the significance of the deer

Great movie, in before @NoSmilez declares it a shitty movie and recommends us the next dragon ball movie which is a 10 out of 10.

Maybe he was trying to keep a piece of innocence for himself? Or was worried Teddy or Chris might shoot it? I’m honestly not sure.

one time I was crawling along elevated railroad tracks & a piece of paper fell out my pocket that had the login info to my 2001 sherdog user account.

I still haven't gotten over that.

The only academy award it was even nominated for was best adapted screenplay, feels like a huge robbery in hindsight

Who do you think gave the best performance? I’m going with Feldman or Sutherland. Although Dreyfuss’ couple of scenes along with his narration was great as well.

Feldman was surprisingly fantastic in this, especially compared to how the rest of his career went, I guess Carl Reiner really knew how to get a performance out of him.

Edit - just looking at his filmography, he did Goonies, Stand By Me and Lost Boys back to back, that was a great run.
