hello
i usually do 10 reps for weight lifting of my upper body, but i dont know about squats.

should i do the same with squats? should my last rep also be super hard? how many sets does everyone do? does doing squats with heavy weights cause ligament and knee joint damage in the long run?

ty

You should read the FAQ first. But most people here recommend lower reps (1-5) but with more sets. And no it does not cause damage if you do them correctly.

I suggest you do triples...3 reps per set.....if you're unsure of your form then keep the weight fairly light......until you gain confidence then do 3-5 sets in the 1-5 rep range....focusing working sets more on doubles and triples...

I also dont suggest 10 rep lifting for your upper body work either....unless you're doing german volume training or you are doing your higher rep work after doing heavy 1-5 rep sets prior....

when done properly and under a decent progression....heavy lifting only strengthens joints, ligaments, bones, muscles, etc......however this ofcourse involves using your brain....so that if u do stupid shit with heavy weight.....ie not give it proper respect....it will punish and possibly injure you.....

also for gods sake read the FAQ.....its there for a reason....no1 is born all knowing but you have to make an initial effort before posting a really basic question.

Read the stickies, they really will help you. We are not just being dicks when we say that here.

hello
i actually do alot of running from playing soccer, and i think my legs are proportionally well toned

is it still important to do squats like the sticky says?

YES YOU STILL HAVE TO SQUAT

Running and squatting are about as far apart as you can get, if you want to be stronger you HAVE to squat, there can be no argument on the subject, it is the king lift and should be done heavy and regularly. This is all.

Look what you've done, retard. You've frustrated Worf. Now we're all dead. DEAD.

ok, well everyone and the sticky says squats are important, i must do squats blah blah

but i want to know WHY it is the king of all workouts, why its important. ive been training only my back and chest for the last 1/2 year, i gained a good 13lbs and beefed up my upper body, which was what i was aiming to do anyhow

why must i do them when my legs are already strong?

Here's a few reasons, although I'm sure there we several more on the way from others:

The squat requires total body skeletal alignment.
The squat requires optimal ROM at the ankle, knees, hips and complete core and cervical control.
The squat requires complete bilateral symmetry.
The squat requires optimal recruitment of all muscles involved in the motion to reduce, stabilize and produce force throughout the motion.
The squat is the most fundamental and one of the defining movements of our species and is the primary movement in all most sports and everyday activities.

This is not to validate it as the king of all "workouts" but it is certainly the king of all movements - you can connect the dots from there.

Jesus man, do some reading on strength training. This spoon-feed finding-out process will only lead to internet arguments and no learning on your part. You either take our word for it or tell us to fuck off. Read about squats, read about strength training, find out what you want from your body, and go do it.

Well a search here or on google would do that. Lazy ass:icon_lol:

this is not to say that you must go heavy to make progress, but you certainly need to do them....

swiss ball squats may be the single most functinal and effective movement in my entire workout regiment.

Honestly, squats were never my forte. I used to hate them because I have very bad knees . My knees would not hold up to heavy weights but that did not discoun the benefits I got from continuing to squat, It sucks man (believe me I know), but ultimately they are effective..

ic
well for the sake of arguement here's what i found on bodybuilding website:
"Every time you do the deadlift, you get stronger. The feeling of getting stronger is the reason why I like the exercise other than the bench press and the squats. Not only are you getting stronger on the deadlifts, but you are also getting mentally stronger.

The mental aspect plays a big part in the deadlift. When I go to deadlift, I tell myself that I am going to pull that weight, no matter what. Sometimes this is another reason why people don't do the deadlift; because it requires mental power which invites hard work."

from what i see, the exercise is more mental than physical. how it benefits you isopen to interpretation really. why do so many peoepl sound pissed when i question the practical value of these?
