When you got the bar on your back, before the first rep (I only do it for the first rep, not every rep), squeeze your glutes as hard as you can. For me, this seems to increase my glute utilization during the decent and rise of the squat. During this squeeze, I can feel tension released from my lower back. Perhaps this initial squeeze does a priming action for the glutes.

Try it and let us know if this is the case for you too.

And hey we just had a thread where we compiled all of our "squat form tips." This would be a nice addition to that

When you say squeeze your glutes, in layman's terms do you mean pinch your butt cheeks together?

Who here likes cheese?

Hmm, i think its a bit more than that. Glute squeezing is used to straighten the angle from your torso to your legs, to straighten out your hips. It is used to push your hips forward.

Tried it yesterday and didn't notice much of a difference. But I just started getting back into squats after a month or so lay off so I dunno if its the best time to gauge minor changes.

Go away. Anything to help my squat get better is welcome.

I will try tomorrow, and report my results.

Cool, love to see how this applies to other people.

I just think somebody here has a buttcheek fetish.

I gave this a shot today. Not only did the old women at the gym check me out before each set, but I was actually able to lift better. I'm Hardac and I approve of this tip.

Carnal is suggesting in this thread to keep 'em tight the whole time. I am not getting the "spread your buttcheeks" concept. How is this done exactly? It doesn't make any sense. Is this the same as Flak's "spread the floor" idea?

I discovered this spread when I was thinking about how to activate my body so that the stress/strain placed upon my body is transferred from my lower back to my hips. When I was descending, I recruited every muscle fiber I possibly could in my glutes and hamstrings. When the body is straightened out, this means squeezing the glutes. However, when their is an angle at your hips, you can't squeeze your glutes too well, but you can flex them them (also try to flex your hamstrings). And when you flex the glutes that way at that angle, they kinda do a spreading motion. The flexing motion is similar to the one that you can do to make you a bit taller if you're sitting down.

Buttcheeks are fuckign awesome.

Lmao, seriously? I'm always self-conscience if my buttflexing is visible, I am hoping my shorts are lose enough.

ASSuming I understood "spread the floor" correctly when it was explained to me by one of my (far stronger) compadres in the PL club, the idea is to push outward with your feet and knees. That doesn't necessarily require a lot of glute involvement, though you can tense your glutes at the same time.

i shall try this

nothin like a good glute squeeze
