Sprained Big Toes?

Does anyone have sprained big toes or something? I don't know what I actually have, but this pain in the joint at the bottom of each big toe is getting annoying, so annoying that I don't train takedowns lately. The thing that aggravates it the most is shooting. Anyone have this and what did you do to get rid of it? I might consider buying wrestling shoes, but hopefully there is another way.

Edit: Oh and I went to the doctor and she told me nothing except Id have to pay to see a physiotherapist, which I'm not doing ($)
 
How often are you training in where it hurts your toes? Is your job hurting them at all?

It seems like one of those things where if you just keep training it'll go away.

When I was younger I know I bitched about every injury and looking back I didn't have any. I mean, they hurt, but they didn't pan out as serious and think I ended up forgetting about them.
 
You might have turf toe (basically stretched the tendons in your toes). This is very common. the only way to get rid of it is rest and ice. Put your feet in a bucket of ice and water after training.
 
i agree with sublam. during my wrestling season a lot of guys had the same thing, and i kinda have it right now. just take care of it and don't be a noob at injuries and you should be fine.
 
Hey all, thanks for the replies.

I am training 6x per week, including kickboxing half the time. Both end up hurting it now. I can't take a prolonged rest until 5 months from now, because I'm going to train in Thailand BJJ + Muay Thai full time. After practice it hurts, but at regular times as well. I've taped the big toes to the other toe next to it but it doesn't seem prevent aggravating the injury. I don't really have inflammation I don't think, so I haven't iced the area.

I will look up turf toe, and hopefully I'll just get used to it and train shooting again. I've had it for over a month so far.

The injury can be debilitating for athletes who need to accelerate or 'cut' quickly. Use of the toes is not possible during the healing process. Since the toes are necessary for proper push-off when accelerating, those sorts of athletic activities can be almost completely curtailed. A healing period of one or more months is often required.

Because of the anatomy of the distal foot and the unique use of foot, it is often impossible to properly tape or brace the joint. Although difficult, it is not impossible to tape the toe to limit dorsiflexion (upward bend of toe). Additionally, wearing a shoe with a rigid sole and cushioned innersole will help. Anti-inflammatory medication as well as physical therapy is indicated.

Turf toe can often progress into a chronic problem, in which the joint(s) never really heals or heals too slowly to return to usual physical activities.

Deion Sanders was plagued with this injury throughout his career, with serious reductions in playing time resulting near the end of his football career.

Turf toe can become more serious if left untreated.

I dont know if this has been said, but maybe you could wear wrestling shoes
 
I had the same problem pretty bad. What helped me the most: wear wrestling shoes, and tape the toes thoroughly under the shoes. For the tape job, you need to tape around the foot (at the ball, widest part), then around the toes a few times, then around the foot another time or so. The goal is to keep the big toes from bending. The shoes will help some, but some positions will still hurt like a sonofabitch, if you jam the toe just wrong.
 
i sprained my toe playing raquetball actually and it hurt like Hell whenever i rolled, but i iced it for a few nights and went light for about 2wks and the pain subsided for the most part. i still feel a sting here and there, but the ice definitely helped me out imo.
 
Seriously rolling will bring you more serious injuries than your toes, my advice, suck it up, your grappling not playing racketball. Let us know when you dislocate or break something.
