There’s a longstanding urban legend that during his MLB career, Wade Boggs was capable of drinking 50 beers during cross country flights. It’s a story fit for revisiting in the season opener of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, explains series star and writer Charlie Day.
Day went on Jimmy Fallon and discussed the tale and the discussion he had with Boggs surrounding the story.
“He was famous for baseball, he was also famous for the number of beers he could drink,” Day said of Boggs. “Supposedly, when they would have these cross county flights he would drink on average 40 to 50, some say 70 beers.
“He told me that the actual number … he pulled me aside and said ‘Charlie, really, it was 107.'”
Yes, Wade Boggs claimed to have consumed 107 beers in a single day. Day explained that Boggs would start prior to arriving at the airport, and continue throughout the flight and after landing. It’s an incredible number and begs the question Day succinctly posited to Fallon.
“So … how is that possible?”
It’s not possible. Unless … unless Wade Boggs is a mutant.
