What's the difference? I keep seeing this place is sport bjj and this place is self defense bjj etc etc etc what's the difference?

Like it sounds...

Self-defense is, well, self-defense. How break bearhugs, throw people of they RNC you while standing, and so-forth. Might be expanded to include striking and such, making it more Krav Maga-ish. Basically traditional jiu-jitsu with BJJ theory.

Sport BJJ is focused on competition. Not all the techniques would be very smart to pull of on the street. Most schools will still show a few self-defense techniques, but that will probably be less than 5% of the time. After you get good at sport BJJ though the self-defense is extremely easy to figure out (you'll know the theory and likely instinctively react correctly, even if you weren't shown how to respond in a specific situation).

MMA is going to be no-gi and combine punching/kicking. Usually those schools are BJJ and/or wrestling with muay thai and/or boxing. Depending on the school it could be "hard core", where people are training for competition, or "lighter" where they do situational drilling.

self defense is more for the streets etc. what to do when ppl attack u from behind/grab u from behind.

sport is with the gi

mma is no gi.

There are different variations of techniques between gi and no gi. While self defense focus on self defense on the streets. what if someone came with a knife etc etc

Wouldn't strike defense be integrated into self-defence BJJ?

but practicing 'self defense' 100% of the time would be lame, hence you do sport bjj

I disagree with the "sport is gi" idea.

Here goes.... besides the obvious submissions in all three, i say....

Self defense is the old version of BJJ or GJJ. Focusing on controlling your opponent into making one mistake and capitalizing on it. Mixed in with strikes and takedowns. Must mostly geared toward no time limit, real fighting.

Sport is designed toward control and position. Leaning heavily toward points for positions. Time limits and scoring are important here.

MMA is grappling with striking. Meaning you have to mix in striking defense to your positions. Hand battles, breaking your opponent down and control are more important. Also scoring and time limits come into play.

Really, the only straight self defense BJJ school would be Gracie JiuJitsu..just sayin.

ya you arent going to show off your awesome sweep from de la hiva position on the street.

^^ dont worry padlock, most people that post here are white belts or people who got their blues from 2 years of participation

I disagree with that. I feel like that's saying, "The only real hamburger is at FuddRucekrs"

Yeah, when we all know its tough to beat In and Out!!! Plus there's these two little places that are also unbeatable! First is "The Charpit" on the North Shore of Lake Tahoe, Ca. and the second is "The HungerClam" on Friday Harbor Wa.

Just say'n.
