So my buddy is getting married to a girl he has been with for 4 years. He's not a wealthy guy but does pretty well, he's pretty much letting her plan the whole thing at his expense since her parents are dead. The cost of the wedding is already up to 7 grand, she just started planning 4 days ago. I can tell the cost is really stressing him out but he's trying to be cool about it since he really cares about her.

Does anyone else think it's kind of a sham to spend that much on one day? A day which is pretty much just a "look at me day" for the woman.

7k is fucking cheap for a wedding your buddy should be grateful his fiance isn't going batshit cray and spending triple that on flowers alone, which is usually what happens when women are left to plan weddings on their own.

In the grand scale of things 7k is not that much, but I don't think it is fair to have him pay for what she wants.

If one part wants expensive things and the other doesn't, the the one who doesn't want it shouldn't foot the bill.

And yes, expensive weddings are pointless in my opinion, as are expensive parties of any sort. A party need not be expensive to be great. Save that money for raising the child(ren).

She's not done, the cost is at 7k now and she still hasn't gotten a dress. He's more stressed at how fast the cost is going up, she just started planning 4 days ago.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he ends up calling the whole thing off. He is already stressing and she pretty much just started planning.

Two industries in the US that are largely just legal rackets... higher education and weddings.

Well, sounds like he can have either the wedding , most of a new car, a nice used car,or a down payment on a house.

Wonder which is the right choice......

My wife wanted a big (expensive) wedding too. I was fine with it because her dad paid for the whole thing.

I wasn't gonna spend money on that, no way. When you're about to start a family, you need to save your money.

I will probably never get married (unless she's rich), but by god do I love weddings. A ton of buddies, free booze, chance of hot bridesmaids.......what's not to like? Hell, I got naked during the last wedding I went to (reception).

Just tell your buddy he's better off spending it on this and having an awesome night, because when they get divorced she's gonna take half his shit anyways, and this way he has way less to take.

    This.

I find that mentality to be quite the turn off. Not my kind of woman.
