Imagine you're 5'8". Can you dunk? Yes, with tons of work and while you're young. But eventually you will turn 30 and not be that explosive and have good knees anymore. Then you can't dunk.

What if you're 6'5" . Then, yes, with no work you can dunk and you can dunk forever. You turn 30, you turn 50 -- you can still dunk.

This is why size, height are >>> skills, speed at the elite level.

For a silver belt this is the most white belt thread I've ever seen.

If your argument is that being big and tall is generally an athletic advantage, well yeah. But if you are implying that skills matter less the older an athlete gets you are dead wrong. Older athletes rely more heavily on technique. This is true in pretty much every sport.

Isn’t that the point of weight classes? To limit someone’s physically advantage due to size advantage?

Its not that size is more important at the elite level but at that level every1 is skilled. So when you get 2 guys who are skilled fighting size comes into play

Lol it’s harder to jump and dunk as you age too. Being tall doesn’t mean you keep any athleticism sadly

The pay off for height is you die before 80. The taller the earlier.

Being 6'5 gives you advantages you wouldnt have at 5'8. But it doesnt mean they dont start to go away with age just like the 5'8 guys

Wrong, you get shorter when you get old.

  14. I'm 6'4" (195 cm) and can't dunk. That basket is pretty high up and you need to get your hand well-above it to dunk. Most people my size can't do that unless they work on it and they certainly can't dunk forever. You need significant explosiveness and I am building my body for endurance (and some people are just couchpotatos and can't do it either).

All things equal besides height, you always go with the taller fighter.

Plus a lot of big guys develop knee and back problems from early on. My cousin is 6'6 240 lbs, and his knees has been shot since he was like 26.

Speed is a component of Time.

Without going into a lecture, go to the Grappling Forum here on Sherdog, and watch Ashton Kutcher vs Craig Jones in a friendly grappling match.

Jones is moving very slow, compared to his physiological capabilities, yet is always ahead of Kutcher.

This is because Jones has driven down these pathways many more times than Kutcher has, so to speak, with much greater risk against others at Jones' own level.

No matter the power, strength, or length, "it still has to get there". This is where timing comes in, which physiological speed is only an aspect of.

    Perception is power.

Nobody told Mike Tyson that so he just KO'ed taller fighters left and right.

Somebody should have warned Cormier he couldn't do the same in mma as well.
