Headgear without gloves (naked hands)… Traditional boxing… any benefits to come?

Edit... person said "feels more natural"... how true is that statement?

It's only beneficial if it is no gloves, no headgear, no mouthpiece.

^True, but I heard using hand wraps with pieces of glass glued on makes the learning experience better.

sounds dumb. I'd be more likely to train with gloves but no headgear because the headgear limits your field of vision

That is one of the stupidest things i have ever heard. You're seriously asking this question?

I am assuming someone told you that, so please don't take it personally when I ask, "Where do people come up with these nonsensical ideas?" The "benefit to come" would be that, if the person preaching the concept is actually stupid enough to practice it, they may succumb to injuries substancial enough to prevent them from breeding, and the benefit would be, not contributing to further global depletion of the gene pool.

No, no, no. You need to use rope, not hand wraps.

I think that we need a be all, end all type thread on the dumbest things people come up with when it comes to sparring.

For the 10,000th time - The safer the sparring, the more of it you can do without being sidelined by injuries. If you want to fight with minimal gear, then turn professional!

Replace "naked hands" with "naked coeds" and you're onto something.

apparently, this "place" (the dude trains at) holds some prestige... so i asked. I honestly, felt like i was missing something after a decade of training.

Truth is, some trainers have some awkward ways of teaching and some "out of the ordinary" or even plain weird drills they use. I have seen plenty. If the trainer is a quality and well respected trainer...... well.... do whatever the hell he says, there is probably a reason for it!

I actually visited a gym once where the boxing trainer would have guys stand with their back to a wall and he had a tennis ball machine that would fire tennis balls at varying speeds and heights at the guy standing against the wall....... At first I thought he was out his fucking mind, but still had to give it a go. That machine would fire those balls awful damn fast, and it hurt like a SOB to get hit with one. His students swore that it helped their reflexes and timing immensely, and they were good damn boxers. After sparring with a couple of them I can honestly say those guys were hard to hit....... Dont know if that tennis ball drill was the reason, but i guess it makes sense....:icon_conf

yeah, but... there's a big difference between having tennis balls shot at you, and giving/taking bare-knuckle punches during sparring :p

agreed! but nonetheless, trainers and fighters alike use some downright strange training methods........ whether they work or not, who knows. I would love to have boxing skills like Marquez, but if that means drinking my own piss (which he does)..... i'll pass.....:icon_chee

Ali used to have his brothers and cousins throw rocks at him as he stood back on to a barn. That's where your oach got that idea from and, I am sure that, Ali heard of Kid Gavilan or Sugar Ray Robinson doing the same thing.
