Me and my gf just rented a house. We moved in a couple of months ago. It's a nice middle class neighborhood. Never had any problems until this morning. My gf has 3 dogs which started barking at around 4:30am. A guy hopped into our backyard and tried to break in through the sliding door. I bought my first gun recently, an AR15. I had it locked up and unloaded. The dogs never bark unless they see someone they don't know. My gf was on her phone ready to call 911 while I got my gun ready. Took me too long. My neighbor had ready gotten up and had the guy on gunpoint while he was in his backyard. My gf called 911 and they arrested the guy. He was armed. It has been a nerve wracking day. I'm stressed out and now I will leave my gun always ready and loaded. I'm still shook up and so is my gf.

It's a quiet neighborhood. Spent the day talking to the neighbors after talking to the police. They said this is the first time something like this has happened in this street.

That sucks man. Good thing you were armed and ready to go. You never know what someone intends to do, but they likely aren't coming in to bake you cookies at 4:30 in the morning.
I have to "attack dogs". One mini weiner dog and one rottweiler. The mini mutt is a fantastic alarm, but lacks any protective properties. The rottie sleeps like a log, but is scary as hell (even tho she is a sweetie)

That said, i'm never far away from a gun.

If it happens in the morning or at night like that, it's almost certainly due to a drug addiction and they can't contain themselves anymore.

Usually thieves are going to try to break in when no one is home and avoid confrontation. Since you're renting, I would try to make sure there isn't some prior story behind the home you are in.

I wear earplugs when I sleep. Id be fucked if there was a break in.

Glad you're safe man. I'm sure banning guns would've prevented the intruder from having one. It would also probably prevent him from wanting to break into your house in the first place.

I will have my gun ready at my bedside now at all times. I have learned my lesson. I never expected this to happen in my lifetime

Like banning guns in Mexico and other countries has actually stopped criminals from obtaining them.

Scary stuff, man. Glad you & your gf are alright. What kind of dogs does she have? Ones capable of taking care of business if that guy actually got in?

I have a .40cal Glock, 2 knives, and a baton all within arms reach of where my wife & I sleep. I also train personal protection dogs..who sleep in my room and my kids rooms.
And I am a 100% believer that everyone should learn some form of martial art.
Multiple layers of protection.

One thing you all have in common in your neighborhood is guns.
If the police were shocked about this incident in your location, wouldn't that mean the intruder could've been one of your neighbors?

Maybe you should get a revolver for yourself that won't take so long to prepare, then teach your chick to load up the AR 15. That way if you go down with the handgun she'll come in behind with the rifle blasting. BANG BANG PEW PEW

I wouldn't underestimate that weiner dog, you can always pick him up and throw him round the guys neck like a bolas.

And to the other guy, at least you know you have proactive neighbours, rather than ones who sit back and think, hey its not my house.

I've had a few fools try to break in through my patio and garage side door. Take extra precautions and buy extra locks/alarms, and always keep a gun within reach. Keep the junkies away.

Glad you're allright, it is a complicated subject, where I live you aren't allowed to have guns and even if someone breaks in and you fuck him up with your bare hands you have to prove that it was proportional and shit. In my honest opinion I think a man has a right to defend himself in his own house by whatever means necessary.

Who were the former tenants? Were they into shady shit? Were they shift workers who worked at night? Otherwise why would this person target your house when the residents would be in the house? Are you a shift worker and they assumed your girl would be home alone?

PS I call bullshit on this story. Nothing like this ever happened, yet your neighbor is up and out at 4am drawing down on somebody in your backyard? Are your three dogs indoor or outside? The former means the neighbor wouldn't have even heard them, the latter means the would be burgler would have been confronted by the dogs outside or would have took off - burglars like quiet and three dogs going nuts at 4am is the opposite of that.

Glad everything worked out and your neighbor had your back. You might want to consider purchasing another gun for home defense besides that AR. It will obviously do the job but there are better options for home defense.

shotgun>ar15 or pistol for home defense. plus, wont kill your neighbors.

Should have shot the intruder and saved the next victim the hassle.

BTW, I'm sure he obtatined his gun lawfully and all his papers were in order.

You would only be able to shoot him if he was in your house. So he would have had to drag him in his house after. Make note for future reference.
