Basically in the overeem fight his hands were at low chest level and he got caught a couple times including the knockdown. This tendency to drop his hands is not just because Overeem was running.
Take his fight with JDS for instance. What I see Miocic do sometimes when he is in exchanges, is that when he punches he doesnt return his hand in a straight line back into guard the way you are taught in boxing. Alot of the time his hand goes to waist level then back up again into guard. I have also noticed that when he throws the 1-2, he chambers his cross at waist level like a karateka. This leaves him open to the left hook. You can see this if you pause at 3:25 and 3:23 of the first round. It seems as though he cares more about getting the most follow through in his punches, even if it compromises his defense. This happens more often the more aggressive he is in a striking exchange.
In his fight for the title Werdum closed the distance with a 1-2. Miocic parries the jab with his rear hand and tries to back up but werdum comes over the top with the cross, which lands because Miocics lead hand is low and reaching for the punch. Basically you are not supposed to reach for punches because it is very easy to go over or around your outstretched arms.
