So I never really write stories about training, usually just a comment on how fun it is etc...I never say who I tapped, or how I did..I don't like to be specific, it's silly and to...BMA_Mat for me.

But I have a question about a technique I encountered tonight.

I was rolling with a rather large purple belt and I played in his guard for a while, he tried some sweeps but I stayed pretty tight..then he tried some strange collar chokes...still nothing to bad..I gurgled a bit on one...so then I can tell he is getting a bit unhappy...

So I finally go for a more high risk move as it is getting pretty slow and uneventful and I end up getting swept, and he gains side control...I start to work to regain half guard and he places his palm blade into my eye socket with the other hand behind my back and basically pushed directly onto my eye...(as if pushing my eye back into my skull), so I mumbled to him.."dude that's my eye there" and he starts pushing harder...

So I tap because I don't want my eye to end up lost in my sinuses somewhere.

I sit up and say politely...what was that man? That hurt my eye.

And he says something like.."oh that is a move...puts pressure on the sinus there"

So we roll again...after about 5 more minutes he does it again...this time I got a little pissed..I mean this is my eye..so i reach up and grab his wrist and he starts pressuring harder with body weight...so I grabbed all of his fingers and peeled his hand off my eye...

which he immediately started saying "No! No! No" "Don't grab my fingers!" loud enough for everyone to hear and gets all huffy...

    Is this normal...

is pressuring the eye something i should expect...I have done no-gi on and off for about 2 years and I've never had anyone do this....This is, however, my second month of gi and I see alot of things I've never seen before...

    It just seemed....dickish to me..

I've personally never seen that. Sounds like a lame tap-attempt.

Just grab his balls and squeeze saying thats a move too.

ive only been training for about 4 months in gi, but i've researched and watched many of bjj videos and rolling sessions and ive never ever heard or seen of anything like the technique you described.

imo it sounds almost illegal. i know there are moves and techniques that push against the head to manipulate the body to move in that direction, but never intentionally focusing in on the eyeball (b/c...it is dangerous to do that).

i would ask your black belt instructor about it - it is a little weird that a purple belt of all people is doing this.

could you have pushed his arm out of the way, or gotten inside control preventing him from doing that?

its all good. if you can, just RNC the bridge of his nose next time. dont even worry about getting under the chin. use the can opener to pass guard. don't forget to skull ride if you pass.

    sounds like a dick.

Glad to hear that it's not a normal thing to have your eyeball squeezed out...I thought maybe I haven't been training "hardcore" enough or something...

Be careful, you dont want to make him even meaner. I would take him aside and talk to him, not roll with him, or tell the instructor. That is, if I were a massive ***. I would just come to class more till you can do it to him....

Tell him you aren't Yuki Nakai and to knock that bullshit. Next time he tries it, jam your fingers up his nostrils and tell him "it's a choke variation to restrict his breathing".

Yah, at that exact moment I wished I was better so I could repay him...on our next restart I thought about jumping an armbar or triangle, but I would hate to piss off a guy who would eventually counter my move then probably choke me unconscious. :)

I just found it strange, I look up to higher belts alot and expect more of them.

That is a total dick move, which is common amongst bigger guys, regardless of rank. I have experienced [email protected]$hole chokes in comps at the purple belt level. Next time, give him some of his medicine right back. training partners are supposed to know better.

    that is stupid.

that should never be done. that could be considered an eye-gouging of sorts, but that is completely a DICK move.

Sorry to be a dick, but full fight linking causes us headaches with legal teams.

Zuffa are VERY protective these days so... don't shoot the messenger here, we just can do without the legal eagles swooping in.

Don't know if the eyeball squeeze is common but higher belts with big egos are. What's common is when they get frustrated and can't finish the RNC they instead attack the face or teeth with the blade of the forearm. Cheap!

Crossfaces or cupping the nose is legit but trying to crush eyes is pretty fucking lame.
