Corona is only popular in the US because we used to think Mexico, all of the Spanish Americas really, were exotic and now there's a significant Mexican population here. Same thing with Modela.

Even the likes of Keystone, Milwaukee's Best, Natty etc. are better

Yes, their branding definitely has their results in my area. All those places to eat and drink along the beach. I guess it puts people in the mood for a Corona. It's the fifth most popular beer in the US and holds a 29 percent market share among imports. That's pretty damn impressive. I really don't get it, though. In the end, it's an adjunct lager going for $10.50 a sixer, in my area.
