So I just binge watched The Wire for the first time.

I watched the first season about a year and a half ago and while I found it entertaining I didn't get the hype. Seeing as I have HBO GO I figured I'd watch the rest of it.

I really enjoyed it, but I don't find it to be the best tv show ever. I'd put it in the top 10, but
The Sopranos is still the goat imo. Season 2 (of The Wire) was probably my favorite season.

Been thinking of watching the wire... Never gotten around to it, first few didn't hook me (I know I know).

Breaking Bad & GoT, I agree with that. Although, breaking bad has so many filler scenes. It drags down the show for me. There's got be 5 hours of non-stop Skylar in there.

GoT also suffers from this but not as bad.

I'm afraid though that GoT will suffer the faith of Dexter by the looks of it. Last season was /meh delux.

I felt the same way after watching the entire first season, but it really does get good a couple episodes into season 2. Like I said I think it tends to be a little overrated, but it's a really good show none the less. I'd put Breaking Bad, GOT, The Sopranos, Black Mirror and Boardwalk Empire ahead of it. I'd put it on par with Weeds, Sons of Anarchy, and Shameless.

I can dig that. One could maybe argue with True Detective, but imo The Wire is better.

The Wire Season 4 is perhaps the greatest single season in television history.

For me, nothing comes close. What The Wire doesn't really do is make its audience crave the next episode. Shows like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones rely heavily on cliff hangers that have people waiting with bated breath for the next development. The Wire is only appreciated in retrospect and must be evaluated as a whole. To see how the story arc develops across 5 seasons (told from different perspectives) is something few other shows can match.

"Best ever" is a pretty big deal. Very few people should consider themselves qualified to make a determination like that, and yet very few people choose "my favorite".

I take a look at shows like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, shows generally in that ball park, and I have a much greater appreciation of The Wire. I find the themes more meaningful, the story telling more complete, the characters more compelling, and the transitions from season to season better sculpted. But you know what? That's just me. That's just how I see it. I'm nobody special, and if someone else feels these same things about another show, it isn't for me to say they're wrong. That's why I don't like saying "best".

Hell it isn't even my favorite, that's The West Wing, but I get why a lot of people would dismiss that instantly.

Actually having thought about it a bit the Shield was kinda cheesy... Still good fun though but had so much wrong with it.
