So can we officially say Ronda is the Royce Gracie of WMMA?

She isn't overrated. She just had the best ground game and was leaps and bounds ahead of her competiton at the time. Now the competition has caught up and her stand up has been exposed, something most of us knew she wasn't every good at.

So she's basically the Royce Gracie of WMMA.

She wasn't the best at the time she was smashing everyone, breaking records, putting WMMA on the map, and becoming a superstar?

Considering the amount of hype she received in relation to her actual accomplishments Ronda is more like the Danica Patrick or Anna Kournikova of WMMA. Sure she was the first female UFC champ, put WMMA in the big leagues, won most of her fights in under a minute but the hype surrounding Ronda was insanely out of proportion.

In 10 years people will look back at Rondamania and say WTF how did that happen!!!!!

Royce fought mostly guys who didn't cross train, Ronda fought fighters who cross trained and had access to modern MMA knowledge some of whom were more well rounded than her.

Ronda is more like Brock or Conor if Conor starts getting "exposed".

Lol I don't even like Ronda like that, I've always rooted against her, but that doesn't change what she accomplished.

She was a UFC hype job. Her UFC debut that lil girl nearly choked her. Rousey had huge size advantage.

I think it's a fair analogy. The Nunes fight did evoke flashing images of Royce Gracie vs Matt Hughes.

The Royce analogy is understandable, but problematic. Royce was fighting at a moment when almost nobody knew anything.

I would say that Ronda is more like someone from the era c. 1996-2000. Formidable in one area (in this case, judo) and possesses one or two other useful tools (she hits hard, and is super aggressive) which together makes for a violent package. She competed against people with a similar range/diversity of skills.

What we are still trying to discover is if:

[1] WMMA has now evolved past that phase as it did with men's MMA, with simply better fighters genuinely skilled in multiple areas - meaning Ronda is a dinosaur

    or

[2] Ronda simply fell victim to the old adage that 'styles make fights', and people worked out how to beat her as a result of her experience with Holm

    or

[3] Ronda became too full of herself and ceased improving technically around late 2013/early 2014, effectively standing still and surrendering her massive lead over other female fighters. She also the lacks the mindset to genuinely improve when faced with crisis after Holm.

I hope that the answer is [1], because it means a better quality of WMMA. But I suspect that the answer is a combination of [2] and [3].

I don't remember Royce getting starched like that so brutally.
