SMS from Nigeria - scam?

Last night I got the following text from a number with +234 as a country code "Hey babe, how have you been? Petal"

I don't know anyone from nigeria, and certainly not anyone called Petal. I found out the country code is nigerian, pretty sure is some kind of scam and obviously haven't replied.

Has anyone experienced this? What kind of scam is it?

Trust me, as a person living in Africa, anything and everything that comes from Nigeria is a scam. This sounds like a relationship scam. If it wasn't just a random wrong number, then "she" is going to tell you some bullshit story about how she's stuck in a humanitarian camp or something, but she's really rich and if you send her money, she will pay you back.

He sent an abusive response telling them to "fark off".

The next day he opened his email account & found 1400 new scam emails in his inbox...
