Yesterday I competed in powerlifting for the second time. It didn't go well.

<object width="425" height="350"> <param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/TTlIseSZWuw"> </param> <embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/TTlIseSZWuw" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"> </embed> </object>

NB. the squats were not filmed and are therefore missing from the video.

I failed my first attempt at 150 on the squat due to being an inch or two above depth. I got it on the second attempt, but then went about 8 inches too deep on my last lift at 160 and failed.

I got my opening bench easily, but when I came to the second lift my right hip flexor cramped up on me as I took control of the bar from the spotters and it fucked with my arch. Same thing was bothering me on the third.

The deadlifts that failed were called for "bar resting on thighs".

They decided to run the competition so that each class did their squats together and then had to wait for the other classes to squat before they got to bench (and similarly for the other lifts). This meant from me taking my first competitive lift to taking my final one was 4hours. This really sucked, worked much better at the last competition when the had a category do all their lift

Nice job dude!

What weight class are you competing in, and did you have to buy all your gear, or do they supply the singlets, DL socks, chalk there?

This has me pumped, good job man!

Good show, old boy. Most inspirational.

I'm in the -82.5kg (pretty much 181lbs). You do have to buy all your gear, but even when you add up the belt, wrist wraps, slippers and singlet it's not really a terribly expensive sport. They did have chalk and talc (for you legs on deads) there for competitors.

I understand your disappointment, Smashius. It's not that you didn't do all that well (the successful lifts are damned good from where I stand, and I couldn't get 205kgs to even budge, let alone worry about resting it on my thighs), but it's got to be a a pisser to have your comp lifts come up short of your personal bests. The DL was close, though, and that has to count for something.

Go crush something to make yourself feel better, and kick a bit more ass the next time you compete. :)

Are those special socks you are wearing, or just regular knee-highs? Oh yeah, I'm ordering the Inzer this week, my waist is around 38"...was wondering if I should go a size up or a size down.

Sorry to hear it didn't go very well. Did you have some fun regardless?

Looks great man, I think the second DL attempt at 205 should have passed, but hey, I'm not a judge.

They're just regular knee high socks, you're required to wear socks that come up to your knees to avoid leaving skin on the bar. I've also got deadlift slippers on (IPF rules say you can't deadlift barefoot or in just socks), mine are titan ones.

Screw that. The last deadlift attempt looked clean. That's why I compete in strongman. ;)

Yeah, well it's now my 'gym max' I'll get it clean easily in a few weeks.

I only really compete to motivate my lifting anyway.

It's cool you competed. Next time you'll do a lot better I am sure.

Very impressive. I hope to be that strong in the near future.

The vid could use some music (or were my speakers fucked up?).

Forgot you were supposed to be power-squatting? :icon_chee

Bah; nice work, geezer. PL comps are worth going to for the atmosphere alone.

Nice lifting man. I remember what I got told at my last meet by a guy in my weight class who doubled my total, when he saw my disappointment "Hey, you showed up. That's a hell lot more than most can do."

(oh, and the second deadlift looked fine to me, damn strict org you're.)

Good job Smashius! I agree that at least the 2nd DL should have passed. Seems like they were nit-picking to me.
