As a Canadian I didn't feel particularly comfortable paying all the shipping fees and potential duty fees on a mouthguard from the USA, even though I know that gladiator, protech, and opro all produce quality guards.

So, in my relentless pursuit I came across smartguards.ca and contacted Daren, the owner. Smartguards is located only an hour from my house, and prices their guards between $50-85 (Canadian/monopoly money)... which, without shipping, would be a huge savings over shipping from the USA... not only that, but he has a dental professional do the impressions for you - no more incorrectly mixed pastes :)

I met with Daren in Oakville to have my impression done, although I understand he's testing out a mail order kit. Everything went very smooth and Daren was very friendly and accomodating (including meeting me at 9am on a Saturday morning as it was the only time I had available). He showed me all of the different types of materials the guard could be made from - frosoft to hard as a rock, and I chose the material that he normally works with (sort of an in-between version).

In tribute to my Irish heritage I asked Daren to come up with a design that incorporated the Guinness beer colours (black, gold, and cream) as well as integrate the Irish harp... I provided him with a picture of a guinness can and he did the rest. Here is the result (image supplied by smartguards since I don't have a digicam):

I'm very pleased with the result - the metallic gold against the black looks really good... in all honesty the pictures don't do it justice.

As for performance - this guard is extremely well made. It's pressure laminated, which in my opinion is superior to vacuum formed. The rubber is soft, but not too soft, and very comfortable. It fits my mouth perfectly, has very nicely rounded edges, and suctions to my teeth like nobody's business. I also have no problems breathing or drinking with it in. After almost a month of usage (approx. 15 wearings), it is still in tip-top shape.

All in all I would say if you are Canadian - and particularly in the GTA/London/KW area, to check out Smartguards.ca and speak to Daren. His guards are the best I've seen in Canada, and better than what the dentist can make (which I was quoted $300 for!!).

Any questions please let me know.

very nice..nice to know u canadians have some quality choices up north..i couoldnt imagine having to oder mostly all mma gear internationally

Nice. Guiness for the alcoholic in all of us. I assume St. Patty's went very well for you then?

cool, thanks for the review. How much did it cost in total, if you don't mind me asking?

As for thickness, I believe it's a dual layer (I find triple too much and impacts breathing/drinking0 - not sure of the exact thickness... don't have a ruler... if Daren from Smartguards reads this post I'm sure he can reply...

As for pricing, it cost about $80 CDN for the custom design... but like I said, they range from $50 (for single colour) up to about $85 for the marbled-style versions...

Hey Guys
Basically most of the plastic we use is European. I find there plastic easier to work with and better for wear and feel. As for over all thickness, the magic number seems to be around 6mm of material. You will see that 6mm is the thickness that needs to be achieved for the best overall protection. You can read more about the overall benefits of this type of guard compared to others at www.sportsdentistry.com With 99% of the guards we make we use a 4mm and then either a 1.5mm, 2mm, or for heavy impact a 3mm finish layer. The final product probably ends up being around 4mm. Total cost for cdn and US. The kits are 100 cdn/us that covers a 1-3 color with any logo (non copyright logo) name and case. The only additional costs are shipping the kit back to me, and any additional design option, or logos. We have 25 colors and can do pretty well anything.
Thanks for the review.
I must add, that the kits with the putties are not the ideal way to get a perfect impression, so I do agree with the review. The impressions made by dental people using proper alginate give a better representation, but over vass distances.. what are you going to do.

Dude, you had me at "Guinness". Awesome idea -- way to rep your heritage. Mouthguard looks really nice, too.

Great review Darren. Great looking guard too!!

Hey Tom - my name is Scott, but you can call me Darren if you'd like... heh

Ha. I meant great review for Daren @ Smartguards and great review by Scott.

I would buy a custom guard if I had the money. Its good knowing that you can get good ones up here in Canada

What would the final bill be for me, I live in vancouver BC so i would need to pay to ship 3 times.. once - the kit to me, 2 the kit back, 3 mouthguard to me. Plus whatever the price is..
What kind of a estimate am i looking at?

p.s. for some reason your site comes up with black text and a black background.. So i have to highlight the whole page to be able to read it.
I am using firefox.

:icon_chee Hello
Sorry haven't checked this for a bit. The shipping to you is covered. You pay shipping the kit to me only. So, $100 cdn (+gst) and shipping the kit back to me only. If there is any wild design, there may be a little extra cost. The extra design costs do not exceed $20. The kit covers any 1-3 color guard with logo, name and case.

Hockeyfight - I thought the same thing until I realized that over time I've probably spent $250 on shorts, about $250 on gloves, $50 on jump ropes, $100 on shin guards, $100 on Thai pads...

Before you buy a pair of shorts, consider spending $100 to protect your teeth and brain - it's worth it dude.

After reading this topic a few weeks ago I decided to get a Smartguard. I live nearby and pass them on my way to work. Being a comic book fan...

Great mouthgurd! Service was excellent - I stopped by during lunch to make the impression and once the guard was ready, Darren met me by my place on a Sunday to drop it off.

I have a custom guard from my dentist and the Smartguard fits and feels better - and is a lot more fun!

I'm not a big comic book fan but that is pretty cool  thanks for the pic.

GOD...why didn't I see this when I was working 2 jobs and had all that extra cash?

Man, I really need to stay out of these forums....till I get more $$.
