I've been doing bjj for two years this Coming Jan. I have progressed a lot, but as far as our club goes, I'm near the bottom of the rungs. I get frustrated losing to more athletic newer guys, but at the end of the day I am having fun, so it's worth it.

I was wondering if anyone in my position ever has ever had a quantum leap (sans Scott Bacula) of improvement? That is, a large improvement very quickly, or am I just destined to be a slow steady tortis( which is okay I guess)?

Thanks.

I train soley privates so haven't had that experience.

But this tale comes to mind. For our warm ups we do a series of necklifts that's a total pain in the ass(neck). We lift our neck, turn our neck, and move our neck ear to shoulder while laying on the ground, 30x each. And I started doing them everyday just so they wouldn't be so hard when we did them during warm ups. And they were still hard as heck. When I told him he was like

"yeah I had the same thing. I just did the routine every day plus, I chose on exercise and did 75 more of those on top of that".

If you wanna bust through your plateau, maybe just double your training for a while.

Or you can continue to not let it bother you and have a good time.

I'm 34. I did BJJ for years but never got any better. It turned out that I was missing critical techniques I never heard of.

Once I got them, it changed everything and I closed the gap with younger, stronger people.

Everyone learns at a different pace. All you can do is enjoy the ride. There's always someone better.

Just remember this - you might never be the best, but you should always be hard to beat!

For me when all else fails and I get frustrated I get into hulk mode and force my will on them. I think im the only guy that lifts weights at my school...

How would you roll against you on your first day? That is the only valid comparison

Few examples of these critical techniques? Genuinely interested

Elbow/knee escape from mount
Gracie closed guard pummeling
Half guard pummeling
A couple better half guard sweeps I could threaten with so I could get to my knees
A couple closed guard subs I could do with their posture broken and clinched.

Care to explain or link to a vid on closed and half guard pummeling? Are you just talking about fighting for your underhooks and preventing the crossface, or something specific?

Besides fighting for the underhook and preventing the crossface, getting them back after you lose them.

There is the Frank Mir Superman which forces them to post their foot and give you guard or post their arm and give up the crossface.

And the 10th Planet Jaws of Life / Lock Down / Whip Up when the Superman isn't working for whatever reason.

The guard pummeling is this mostly:

I wasn't listening to the video. If you skip to 10:45 they are sort of doing it. Once you have the position, you can slip down to the top guy's wrist and attack Kimuras / Omoplatas or sneak your shin in and transition to a triangle.
