Just a conversation starter. I read an article about it in an issue of Black Belt magazine back when I still bought it. I've given up on it, becasue cash-flow dictates that I have to make tighter choices, so now it's Grappling and TapouT/Bodyguard magazone for me.

Anyway, it looks to be more seplf-defense, but wondered if anybody knew more about it.

It is mostly self defense standing application. The theories behind it are sound, and I use it alot in my BJJ. However with that being said I have met alot of "Black-Belts" in TJJ/Small Circle Jyujitsu that couldn't defend themselves from a paper bag.

In many styles of TMA a black belt simply means that you are understanding of all basic principles and ready for advanced study. It doesn't have to mean master. And I guess that is why there are 10 levels to black.

I was able to study with Wally Jay and some of the newer SC JJ guys are pretty good. But it still isn't quite brazilian.

Isnt small-circle jujitsu mostly small-joint manipulation?

From what i remember it is a combination of a lot of ju jitsu systems... Mostly gared toward small- joint minipulation

small circle is an "idea" what the basics concept entails is going back trhough all the things you know and learning how to make them a little tighter and get more effectiveness.

Now yes you are right that is is mostly popularized by the small finger joints manipulations that made his (Prof Jay's) demos so interesting. But don't think that all it has to deal with is just fingers.

In SC JJ all joint are a target.

I actually live very close to Wally Jay's house where he also teaches. I've been mildly interested in studying this but not enough to get serious about it.

also ... I talk with uppermost reverence ... What Walley did in his young life vs what he taught in his old life are a little different in that as Walley Got older he was unable to do what he did when he was a great fighter.

Does Small Circle have any moves that are not in BJJ and could be useful for it ? Since it's a self defense style, do they also train strikes ?

Yea, it is mostly standing, self defense stuff. Not bad things to have in your arsenal, really.

At my club the head instructor is a black belt in small circle ju jitsu and shorin ryu karate, 2 other black belts are decent wrestlers and one of them coaches a high school wrestling team and I've done both wrestling and judo before I started with this club so we're fairly well rounded. If only a bjj black belt came out!
