Just curious as to whether anyone approaches their sleep scientifically. Any sleep aids; specific times for sleep or naps; minimum hours; certain environments-dead quiet, pitch black etc.

yeah, take every sleep aid you can get your goddamn hands on. minimum 6.124 hours and maximum 8.12 hours as per latest scientific studies.

I prefer not to take naps, because if I take a nap, I usually have problems falling asleep later, which is something I try to avoid.

I try to go early enough to bed, to get 7 hours of sleep. Usually I just sleep in complete dark.

For sleeping aids, you could look into ZMA/Melatonin. Personally, I've tried ZMA and am still quite skeptical of the thing. Not sure whether it worked or not, don't think it did. But it has a good reputation I think, so maybe I just didn't have the real stuff... dunno.

I like to smoke pot before going to bed. Works really well for me, especially if I'm stressed/whatever and have problems falling asleep.

Im more of a night person, but i sleep 6-7 hours in general. i rarely take naps( and if i do its 30 minutes max) more then enough...

Sleep is such an important thing. I struggled with insomnia for a period of time and it almost destroyed my life. I would lay awake and not know why I couldn't fall asleep. I was a zombie at work when I didn't end up calling in sick and my BJJ training and physical fitness levels suffered. In my opinion insomnia should be approached holistically not just with medication. Anything that may be creating stress needs to be identified and resolved, excess physical energy needs to be burnt, diet needs to be investigated, than finally medication if all else fails. I am glad I haven't had sleep issues in years and can now go to sleep like a normal person.

Make sure you eat healthy foods.

You'll need a lot less sleep when your body doesn't have to recover from eating shit all day.

I am by no means an expert, but I usually try to get 7-8 hours a night. That has nothing to do with any research at all--just the range that I feel the best with. Anything below 7 or over 8 and I feel like garbage.

If you have trouble getting to sleep try sleeping in complete darkness, and using your bed only for sleeping. No laptop, television, etc.

Again -- no research to back any of this up; only personal experience.

I aim for eight on weekdays but often get around seven if not less (less than six during the uni exam weeks). As such, I often find myself sleeping for twelve+ hours on the weekend to make up for it...

Again, no scientific evidence but lack of sleep does make me really really REALLY cranky and my head kind of aches and spins...

I go to sleep when I'm tired and geet up when I'm not. If that means napping for five minutes in the middle of the day so be it. Hell, I've even slept 18 hours during some of my growth spurts as a teen.

Start posting on the other forum you dick. We demand stories of womanizing Canadian bitches.

I find it easiest to go to sleep & wake up ~ the same time every day. Especially key is waking up at the same time. But if my schedule is thrown off, I try to sleep in multiples of 90minutes (a sleep cycle from shallow wave down to deep wave back to REM sleep is ~90minutes).
I'm an 8 hour a night girl, sometimes more if I've been stressed, training hard, or studying a ton (because new memories are consolidated during slow wave sleep). Sleep debt is real & can dramatically impair cognitive function. I find it's easier for me to pay it off by going to bed earlier rather than trying to sleep in.

HGH, which is hugely important for recovery, is secreted during sleep and the amount secreted into the bloodstream increases the longer one sleeps (maxing out after 8 or 9 hours, if I remember correctly).

I'll nap on my days off if I need it.
I take melatonin sometimes. Not necessarily because I need it to go to sleep or stay asleep but because I love the technicolor dreams I have when I take it.

And I sleep w/my curtains open as natural light helps me wake up more easily.

Food allergies can kill your sleep. Im gluten intolerant and am lucky to get 3 hours uninterrupted if I eat any. Avoiding that coupled with a mg of melatonin and a zinc and magnesium supplement makes me sleep like a baby. I've heard athletes have a lot of trouble maintaining a normal zinc level.

magnesium is what makes zma an effective sleep aid, so you can just take it by itself since its cheaper that way

I sleep anywhere from 7 hours a day to 9 hours a day, not including naps. I seriously have a sleeping problem has I have always slept in all my classes since high school and throughout college (although the problem was a bit lesser in severity in college). Not sure if I have insomnia or I just have 0 endurance whatsoever...

I've developed an addiction to Unisom and I'm trying to break off but no luck.

Work regularly screws up my sleep schedule, so i had gotten into the habit of taking benadryl once or twice a week at night to sleep. I used to take it even more regularly for allergies though, otherwise id be hesitent for this particular off-label use.

I got some melatonin pills a few weeks ago and are using them instead. They started out working extremely well, but im worried their effectiveness is waning. That might be in my head/just different conditions though.

All that said, im wary of over using anything because i dont want to become dependent. Best sleep aid is heavy lifting during the day.
