It's no secret that the educational system in the US is pretty poor, with a high rate of high school dropouts. Our teaching methods and concepts are outdated and boring. How can this be improved upon in the 21st century?

If you simply changed the words "learning" or "going to school" into "TRAINING" I believe this would completely change how students and teachers looked at school. Imagine the ninja training in Batman Begins. "your parents death was your father's fault." "the man had a gun!" "Would that stop you?" "I've had TRAINING."

Training as a term, indicates learning something of use, something invaluable, and the word implies discipline. What is school for, realistically? It's for LIFE TRAINING. It's teaching you how to navigate through life. It IS life training, and but it's not really viewed that way at the moment. It's viewed as a boring chore that many aspects of are useless in real life.

If you called it "training," that simple word change would change the entire concept of what it means to go to school. Kids might even get excited about the idea of going to training all day long. Then once you get that concept change down, you can then begin to change the curriculum from it's outdated format, into life skills that will be invaluable in 21st century life.

    Just a thought.

It's a simple fix to change the way everybody views schooling.

"what did you do today Jimmy?"

    "I trained."

Think about it. That's what schooling really should be, life training. And just the word TRAINING makes you think of taking something seriously, and learning something useful. We here think of mma training, but others might think of military training, or ninja training, or whatever. The point is that it would be taken more seriously, and viewed differently. Once it's viewed differently, you can start to make real changes in the educational system. But we have to retool the concept of school first. I think calling it "training" would do just that.

So you think that kids and teens will go from being uninterested in the boring subjects taught in school simply by telling them they're training. You think changing one word will elicit a complete change in behavior (a 180 degree change if you will)?

Were you high when you came up with this idea? Either that or this is a weak troll job

Which sounds more important, more serious, and more official?

    I've had military schooling.
    I've had military training.

    I went to flight school.
    I went to flight trainng.

    I've had martial arts schooling.
    I've had martial arts training.

    I went to school today.
    I went to training today.

Schooling and training are the same thing. But the word training is always taken more seriously and looked at more prestigiously.

The problem with this is that it ignores that the problem isn't the terminology, it's the content.

You start calling it training and pretty soon kids will hate training.

As someone who is pretty passionate about reforming the American education system, I would like to train to stomp the balls of whoever made this terrible thread.

Spider-Man totally fucking owns any Batman flick when it comes to viable life lessons for kids.

With great power, comes great responsibility.

    That shits timeless.

About the only things I learned from Batman Begins were 'rub your chest to keep warm because your arms will take care of themselves' and to 'mind your surroundings'.

I actually believe some of the things taught in high school should be taught sooner and kids entering high school should have multiple options to choose from like college

I am teaching an undergrad class right now as I post this. I will be sure to let them know they are training rather than learning. I will report back

i like the idea, threadstarter. but changing the word-itself, isn't going to accomplish anything. really, i think that schools need to show the connection between high school and money. everyone knows that money is the key to success in life. at the very least, earning a reasonable amount is needed. and in order to make that money, people need to have jobs. high school -> jobs -> money. a lot of kids should realize that even the boring and lame algebra test, is an important part in making that money.

I'd rather just hijack a couple of school buses full of children and take them to a secluded island where the object is to battle one an other to the death until only one remains. Winner gets their college tuition fully paid.
