I took the day off yesterday to spend some time with the family. We went to a community pool during parent and tot time (parents swim with their kids under the age of 5).
My older guy is 3 and 3 months and really active compared to other kids. So we're in the pool having a good time, and he's splashing the water around and actually learning to swim. He's kicking with his feet and dipping his head in the water and everything in the deeper part of the pool where it's just me and him.
This other kid who was closer to 5 years old was shy and his mom kept him in the really shallow end. However he sees my son having fun and i'm tossing my son up and down in the deeper section and he tries to swim over towards my won to join in but once his head sinks in the water he freaks out and his mother freaks out.
The mom says that my son is too active and I said she should just chill out. She's one of those women that goes to the pool, but hopes to keep her hair dry (pretty silly if you ask me). I asked if they wanted to play and toss the ball around to make the peace in the shallow section, she said that's a lot better than my son splashing so hard over there in the deep end and getting her son excited. So they're throwing it and back and forth and this kid has no aim and can't really , eventually my son throws the foam ball at him and it hits him in the face because the other kid can't catch.
She freaks out this time and says "your son is a bad influence, he splashes around and now he's hurting my son". I said "lady, my son was minding his own business in the deep end, why do you care if my son splashes around in the pool and it's not my son's fault your son can't catch".
She actually goes and tells the lifeguard, and the lifeguard (some 18 year old kids) just kinda shrugs thinking what can they do about it, or what does she expect him to do. Anyhow, she takes her son away and I keep on playing with my son. My wife comes who was over in another section with my 7 month old and asked "what's that woman's problem?"
CLIFFS:
- my son splashes around in the pool
- kid chases after him and nearly drowns because that kid can't swim
- plays catch with the kid
- rustles an uptight mom's jummies
