...& then watching them get mauled by a wrestler. Yeah, Weidman knows BJJ but it wouldnt matter if he didnt.

Where were the BJJ skills when Cain mauled JDS? & if they're so important, why does JDS furiously avoid going to ground against EVERYBODY?

Occassionally, you'll see an Anderson Silva type triangle pulled out, but on the whole it just ends up looking he did against Sonnen/Weidman, aka being pounded on

I think BJJ is overrated, beyond the point of knowing the basics of knowing how to defend it. Even when the guy is dangerous on the ground, often his opponent can disengage & get up any time he wants

Bjj is not only technic its also about strength

BJJ isn't overrated but some BJJ black belts are. Does that make any sense? Not ever gym has the same...quality. And some black belts are more meaningful than others. I often get the feeling that a lot of gyms in Brazil just kind of give Brazilian guys black belts after they have been competing for a while. So that is why there is a big difference between BJJ black belts like Vitor Belfort and Jacare Souza for example.

my favorite is when people speak of Roy's bjj.

it would be just as relevant for his mma career so far to say that he has a masters in pancake design.

I expected white belt TS entering this thread.

Pure BJJ > Pure wrestling. Matter of fact, Pure BJJ > Any other martial art.

I agree. Gyms probably give away black belts too easily to pro fighters.

Absolutely.

Its also not a BJJ contest. The other guy can get up, punch you in the face, or whatever. We've seen that even a wrestling advantage can been neutralized (or reversed) from time to time (DC vs Jones for example) with this in mind. With BJJ, your superiority needs to be completely off the scale to make a difference compared to other factors

It can help you fight more comfortably if you're not afraid of the ground. I disagree with the idea that BJJ only matters on the ground.

No the difference is that Jacare was a world champion many times.

You forget that weidman and cain train tons of bjj. Weidman is pretty decorated in bjj as well (somewhat of a prodigy)

At the blackbelt level, there is a huge spectrum of black belts. Weidman is near the top. I wouldnt be surprised if cain did very well in bjj tourneys as well

Wrestling is such a strong grappling base and breeds tough competitive athletes. The level of training thesw guys go through as kids is underappreciated

There is a huge difference between black belts and that's why it's become meaningless. There are black belts and then there are Werdum, Palhares, etc.

Weidman is a jiujitsu blackbelt, this is retarded. Sonnen and Cain are also high level grapplers. This is silly TS and you should feel bad.

There are a lot of blackbelts out there now, just having one doesn't make you a world champion. How many blackbelts do you think can hang with Marcello Garcia because they have a blackbelt? Having a blackbelt does not make you Marcelo Garcia. There are blackbelts and then there are BLACKBELTS. Understand?

BJJ doesn't work if you don't use it. Punching from mount bottom is not really bjj.
