Hi guys,

I have had problems with my shoulders for several years. Due to shoulder impingement they can get enflamed and start hurting quite a bit. I have the situation under control by knowing when to put ice on, when to rest and such...

However, when I up my training the problems kick up. This is very annoying because it is hard to progress and build muscle memory when your shoulders only allow a certain amount of training.

When we do repetitive drills like straight line punching my shoulder goes a sort of numb where I'm not able to really throw a decent punch anymore. It feels like the muscle is so tired that I'm not able to throw my arm out anymore, but I think it is related to my shoulder problem rather then a muscular one.

Do any of you have experience with this kind of problem? I'm starting to think surgery might be my only option left but I fear the recovery afterwards...

Thanks in advance

I started getting shoulder pain the last few years. I don't really get it training but after a day or two but it's random. I'll feel like I'll lose my range of motion a tad.

I had a cortezone shot that helped but I think I might need another.

Idk if it's just from boxing. A couple years ago I was in a street fight where I dipped this dude but I landed on my shoulder. Didn't feel it until I got arrested and was sitting in my cell. Couldn't lift above my shoulder. It's been fucked really ever since.

Get scanned man, dont wanna mess around potentially making a minor issue a major one.

Any of you also have had the experience where your shoulder feels 'tired' or stiff even after just a little training?

Yoga mate! I know it sounds a bit gay, but I tore my shoulder many years back and had issues with it ever since. However, after years of soreness, tension and a heavy aching, along with similar feelings of numbness and nervy tingling after heavy workouts, I tried a bunch of different things and treatments and the only thing that truly fixed it was really getting into yoga.

I suppose you could just do all the related stretches without any downward dogging, unless you're really into that stuff, but this helped me immensely. Gave me back nearly full range of motion, regained the loose fluidity I used to have rather than the tight, stiff, tense movements I ended up with after it. No more nerve tingling and that awful heavy ache, dead feeling of the muscles.

Can't recommend it enough for bringing back looseness, flexibility, and easing tension, soreness and related pains. You gotta give it a good bit of time for it to really loosen things up and for your body to let itself loosen up.

i have problems with both of my shoulders, although the right is the worst. I was fine until about the last year or so where i started to get inflammation etc. when training. It got really bad so I went and got scans etc. and started the rehab process. The left I was lucky is not torn, and seems to be on the mend now after some cortisone - although it is quick to get upset so i'm trying to take it easy and do my rehab. The right shoulder has a torn ligament, bursitis and some arthritis. I haven't figured out how to solve that yet, my physio has told me that my shoulder is rotated way too far forward. This is a common problem, and boxing definitely is a cause - lots of tightness through the pecs etc. will pull them forward, and of course the way we stand tends to have the shoulders hunched forward a little rather than being completely open and pulled back. Obviously training with repetitive shoulder movement going forward will affect it too. I'm trying to remediate this with lots of scapula work and massage through the tight areas at the front. Band work, rotator cuff stuff, anything i can do without causing acute pain really. So far i haven't had any improvement to my ability to box, but i've regained some range of motion so that's something I guess. I've been out of action from boxing for probably a solid 4 months or so. perhaps longer. My biggest problem is that i'm 36 years old and shit just doesn't heal like it used to I think. I really hope i can get it sorted, because I honestly dont know what I would do if I couldn't box in some capacity.

none of that probably helps you, but i guess my advice would be to have someone who is properly trained look at your posture and see if they can identify any imbalances. Take some time to rest and let the inflammation subside, and then work to correct those imbalances and restore function to your shoulder. Training through it can make it worse in a hurry - if you catch it while it's still early you'll probably have less problems fixing it.

Lol how did you get in a street fight and end up arrested from it too? I've always been a bit baffled by people that still get into street fights after high schoolish, early 20s age. Please ignore the following if that might still be you. I just don't get how, once you get past a certain age, you still find yourself in such situations. They are so easy to avoid in reality and I found once I grew out of that age, I would much prefer to just have fun instead of go around looking for fights or looking to insert myself into situations that would inevitably lead to fights. Not to mention that with training usually comes a sense of not really needing to force your ego out into the world and get macho on everyones ass.

Sorry if this seems offensive, because it's truly not meant to be, so I apologise if it comes across a bit dickish and righteous which it probably does, but I always found the guys who still got into street fights well into their 20s and 30s to be massive cunts. Ruins everyones good night, doesn't achieve anything, ever, and always leads back to some banal egotistic insecurity thing. You know, 'my bicep is bigger than yours', type shit or some other thing. I dunno.

So, what happened in this instance? Was it you being a dick, or some other guy being a dick, or was it just general drunkenness all around and everyone being dicks comparing biceps?

He unzipped his dick, the other guy didn't like it, things escalated.

Naw I don't take it as you being a dick.

Truth be told I love to fight. Its just in my blood. I get most of it out at the gym. I used to fight all the time in highschool but did grow out of street fighting and grew up.

So the night in question was rare. I was invited out to a house party . was really fun, Lots of women n fun . some Sacramento kings Cheerleaders even came over so yeah it was cool.

Well it was getting late and I went in the house to grab my brother. As I walked in my brothers girl was like you got to get your brother, some guys trying to fight him in the kitchen .
When I get in there my brothers talking to a guy on one side of the room and on the other side some steroided freak had his shirt off staring my brother down.

I approached the freak to see what happened. (He didn't know that was my brother). I asked him what happened and maybe he was still hyped or drunk but Staring at my brother he was like fuck off. I was surprised and said wtf did you say? To his credit he never waivered. He turned right to me and to my face told me to fuck off.

I floored him. Girls in the kitchen started freaking out. You can't do that blah blah. The guy starts getting up. I figured if I didn't knock sense into him he would want to go head up.

I was wrong. He got up And walked into the living room and went from one guy to the next pointing at the kitchen. I realized then I was out numbered and it was time to go.

As I start to leave... the whole house comes out with like 40dudes all start screaming one on one. Lol ya I'm sure this fight will be fair. Me and my brother ran to the car but one guy opened my brothers car door as we pulled out and yanked him out of the drivers seat. I hopped out and guy started coming at me and I started fucking him up. He went for a clinch and thats where I dipped him.

When I got up it was chaos. I didn't know where my brother was and it seemed a few fights broke out. my attention turned to my brothers car that was rolling down the street. People were trying to get in it. I ran over there pushed some guy on the passenger side away hopped in, started kicking some other person out the driver seat. Someone punched me through the window. I hit the gas and hit another car. I was able to reverse and turn the car around and could see the street. I saw my brother unconscious on the ground with a guy punching him and others standing around.

I drove right at them and hit one of them. I got chased By a mob but got away. Parked started to go back to get my brother. The cops came then. I was arrested for tons of charges. Big one was driving with intent to injure or kill someone.

I fought it for a year and plead to a hit n run misdemeanor. I actually just got the charge expunged last Monday. Fucking 5gs later

I have a bad shoulder too and it's a real pain in the butt. It's definitely limiting but it's a pretty serious surgery. If you have the time for recovery it might be worth it. It depends on how much it bothers you.

Ya I'm glad its behind us. My bro was almost in a coma, was out for a couple days. Head was like twice the size but he's cool now, just had a kid.

It sounds like you have unbalanced shoulders. You punch and punch and punch which only uses the anterior deltoid, never work out the other heads of the shoulder, thus end up with a fucked shoulder.

Work the lateral and posterior head of the shoulders. In theory you should be doing one rep here each time you punch, but that's likely not realistic.

Don't go the cortisone route. I had an injection to sort out my foot, apparently. 3 years later the nerve damage hasn't recovered from what they did. Get a scan and talk to someone.
