This was posted on Mayberry. Should we try this system over here? A system which has among the lowest recidivism rate in the world?

Before you answer, 2 weeks ago, I was watching the local news which I almost never do. A guy has been arrested for breaking into a home and raping a 5 year old girl and killed her by dismemberment.

What would you do if this was your daughter and the guy was sent to this prison, in which a life sentence doesn't even exist?

To be fair, that “worlds toughest prisons” covered the Norway correctional facilities and the presenter on that show even said:
“These facilities aren’t open to everyone”

So habitual offenders and people that are convicted of truly egregious crimes go to more traditional lockup style prisons.

As a person working in the criminal justice system it depends on the crime honestly. Drunken bar brawl where you hit a guy and gave him brain damage? PROBABLY don’t need to be in lockup with lifelong offenders that have killed people just cause.

For non violent or non serious violence, sure.

For murderers, rapists etc, no. Fuck em all.

This will get people to grab pitchforks but.....

Not all rapists are the same. The kid that is 18 and had consensual sex with his 15.75 year old girlfriend could be convicted of a child based sex offense and forced to register for life.

Should he be treated the same as an Epstein type or a Jared from Subway?

I don't think something exactly like the minimum security prison shown in that clip could work, and also as @Gregolian mentioned maximum security prisons do not look like that in Norway either. However, I think the overaching theme of "we take away their freedom but not their lives" as in implementing certain aspects of the Norwegian system could work very well, and quite frankly should be the standard. The US prison system fosters crime and violence, it doesn't curb it.

The show is on Netflix but the host spends a week in prisons around the world (like Romania and shit too) and he spent time in lockup in England for a murder he was falsely accused of.

HE even said going from what he knew to that rather dormitory life with school and jobs was really REALLY unnerving to him. Especially with guards saying hello and shaking his hand and shit

Interesting. Yeah, it's definitely different. Even here in Denmark we view the Norwegian style prisons as way too lenient, but at the same time, I think there's lessons to be learned. Every country and even region will have different challenges, but prison should be, in large, something that focuses on rehabilitation when possible. Or at the very least doesn't activitely create monsters, because it's the people in society that pays for that down the road.

That's a vacation for most people in the world, not a punishment for crimes committed.

Statutory rape in this case should not be included in actual rape or child molestation. They all need to be distinct, as jn most high schools.some 17 or 18 year old is dating a 15 year old which isnt uncommon.

Now say a 24 year old and 14 year old even though it may have been consensual...yeah fuck that guy.

Good luck with that. Recidivism is a feature of the US prison system, not a bug.

Let me speak on behalf of the WR's right flank and state: There are just too many non-white inmates in the US system for the Norway model to ever work.

If there was a better system in place to allow people to leave the gang life and stuff this Norway style system might see some success in the US.

Sadly there isn’t.

The 18yr old and 15yr old boyfriend girlfriend example I see no problem with. Probably because I was actually that dude. I wouldn't consider what we did was rape. She never told me no or tried to stop what we were doing. That went on for 3 years. Today people might see a problem with it when I was that age it was not seen a problem I am 35 btw.

Second example easy bullet in the head and let the crows have at em. They are garbage.

There are people in America that define themselves by criminal culture, think it's normal, and want to spread it to the secret delight of big money and government who wants neighborhoods that need to be run by others.. Those types are defined by "the life" that 15 year old girls seem to think is cute in rap (joke) music, and really don't want to live normal lives like some of us other struggling yet non-criminal types.

It doesn't work the same here.

I DO think that prisons in America should shift to have more similarities with that system.

America doesn’t benchmark better ideas.

That’s why we still have an antiquated healthcare system.

I will repeat what i said in mayberry

One good thing this system has that it encourages revenge from victim

Victim kills the offender and just goes to goverment paid hotel himself

The system in Norway is overrated and not perfect. Some others are getting not good punishment, like Breivik. And they also use isolation. But instead of taking life prison, Breivik will probably be free in 8 years. Unreal! And isolation is not really isolation, he can also use other rooms plus his room is ok, has a shower, maybe a TV or PC or something, etc.

The Americans don"t know, but Norway is full of :eek::eek::eek:philes. There are also myths in Europe about the best educational system, of Finland, but in fact there is almost no Finnish scientist in the world. At the top of the world...

In rest, overall, yeah Norway is a nice quiet country! But you can"t copy something without improving it if it"s far from perfect. These are myths, legends.

PS. Moreover, I know they are helping them to understand life, but sometimes recidivism doesn"t happen so often in more developed countries. And maybe even some of the detains from there, are immigrants.
