You fight is ta X weight class, so why should a fighter be able to weigh in at X+1? Then, you don't have that option for championship fights, which makes even less sense. Just do away with it altogether. It mainly is just a benefit to heavier cutters.
It's only a pound off, who cares? So many fights will be cancelled because of one pound if they got rid of it.
do you like fights falling out the last minute because of 2 pounds? do you like fights falling out the last minute because of 3 pounds? etc. Why have you drawn the line at 1 lb specifically? It seems arbitrary. Besides, what you say doesn't even make sense. Fighters typically specifically aim for the maximum weight. They generally try to weigh 206, 186, 171, etc. Those that don't, and weigh in at the actual limit, are just erring on the side of caution. If they removed the 1 lb allowance, fighters would have to cut an extra pound. Some would weight less than the limit to err on the side of caution. Fights would fall out last minute without the 1 lb allowance just how they do now. You're suggesting that fighters 1 pound over would cause the fight to be cancelled. You do realize that fighters can come in 1 pound over in the current system too right? If they're aiming for 171, they could easily fuck up and come in at 172. Do you understand? I agree with TS. I don't think the 1 lb allowance makes sense.
The Nevada commission makes fighters make exact weight for title fights; I don't entirety understand the notion because what if the scales are off a pound.. But those are the stipulations regarding weigh-ins
Yeh but it's pointless. If anything they should have the 1 pound leeway, they h Ave a 5 round fight and are under more stress/media obligations and there is much more on the line if they miss weight.
I think the 1lb allowance is stupid but that's just me. It doesn't even make sense to have a weightclass if you're going to allow ppl to weigh in over it. Why anyone would ever aim to hit the exact target is beyond me. Why cut the extra lb if you don't have to?
No just do away with weight cuttig. Same day weight in's and weight in's before the fight. Any fighter who weights 1 pound over right before the fight is disqualified from fighting and will be fined. Any fighter trying to secretly cut weight will be caught via dehydration tests and weight in's right before the fight starts. See my thread on this. WW division= 170lbs to 191lbs. MW division= 185lbs to 208lbs. LHW division= 205lbs to 230lbs Etc.
It's a means to take into consideration calibration issues. Can it benefit heavy cutters? Sure, but not really to the extent that some may think. Its purpose is prevent people from being penalized for inconsistencies in scales. I don't have an issue with it.
