If the Travis Lutter fight were held today would it not be considered a title defense since Anderson made weight, even though Travis didn’t?

One thing to take into account : while it's impressive, he got a title shot after his 1st UFC fight.

Then you have guys like Tony Ferg who had to win 10 fights in a row against top competition to get a title shot.

Rules change, but I don't see why this would affect the Spiders streak?

Thats always been a dumb rule IMO. Anderson defended his title with a straight up disadvantage.

I agree it should be counted as a title-defense, but it doesn't matter so much because the people who watched his career know exactly that it should be.
Who cares about what the UFC says.

You can't use rules of today to go back and change rules/outcomes of the past. Otherwise every single fight that happened before the unified rules would not count either. If the rules were in place as a defence when it happened then yes it was a defence.

Khabib won the belt against a guy who missed championship weight

I don’t understand. The only time that happens that I’m aware of is a fight for a vacant belt. If one of those participants miss weight, then only the other participant is eligible to win it. But if a challenger misses weight to fight a reigning champ, it’s not a title defense. Never has been, and isn’t now. There’s no possibility of the champ losing the title. Therefore, nothing is being defended.

Agreed, good context to keep in mind. Further context is that he was pretty mediocre in Pride, so when he came to the US/UFC I wasn't expecting much out of him....whoops.

Silva faced far better competition prior to coming to the UFC which more than makes up for this. Also, who is this top competition Tony is beating?

Agreed, Lutter is the Michael Jordan of jiu jitsu. Silva really overcame a huge obstacle there.

I mean, the stakes and pressure of losing your title is taken away so it shouldn’t count. It sucks that Lutter took that away from Silva but it’s just one of those things.

I think you're over-valuing some of those wins. By the time he beat Cowboy and Pettis, they were shells of their former selves.

Tibau ended up losing his next three fights. Not impressed.
RDA was coming off a loss and is 4-4 since.
Since 2015, Pettis is 5-8. And was 3-5 when he fought Tony.
Cowboy has lost three straight and before the Tony fight was 4-4 in his previous 8 fights.
Thomspon was on a two fight losing streak and was 4-5 in his previous 9 fights before fighting Tony.

I'm just not seeing the "top competition."

Nah, because irregardless Jon is 15-0 in UFC title fights, all held at LHW.

He's the unofficial best UFC champion ever.

alvarez, gaethje, conor, khabib, diaz, oliviera, poirier. his run was great but there were plenty of top lw's he didn't face or beat. he did beat who was in front of him (gaethje notwithstanding).

DJ has the record either way. Whether it's tied or DJ has it outright, DJ had 11 defenses

cowboy had won 3 straight including a top 5 win. 2 of his losses were to top ww's in competitive fights. he arguably beat robbie lawler 1 fight removed from the title.
