I used to get them often from running on a treadmill. My advice would be to go to a running store or a foot dr. Have them analyze your feet and how you run. There are 3 different kinds of shoes for running depending on your feet and the way you run. Once I got the right running shoe my shin splints were gone.

Use those neoprene elbow supports just put them on your shins I have done this and it works great

What shoes are you running in? How's your form?

Take it easy! If it doesn’t feel better after about a week try a topical anti-inflammatory patch to prevent the problem from exacerbating itself... and of course finding out what the cause is i.e. wrong shoes, overtraining, tight achilles, etc.

Th 2 big ones:

1) Proper shoes. Go to a RUNNNG shoe store, have them recommend several shoes for you based on your stride/foot strike (get your foot measured too). Then try them all on and see what feels best. Oh ya ask them how the shoe is suppose to feel.

2) Don't over do it. Going to hard to fast is a great way to get your body to protest any activity. Make sure you are not increasing your distance or time too much each week. If you just started running without prior training you could be going out too hard. Looking at some of the beginning running programs on the net such a 'Couch to 5K' on Cool Running

What type of surface are you running on? Might want to change that as well. I used to get them running on hard surfaces.
