Woodley is not a counter puncher.
The times he rocked Wonderboy was via bull rushing and charging with his right hand
Then AFTER Wonderboy was already HURT, Woodley continued to rock Wonderbody via staying close and punching with him
Woodley has never KOd anyone with a counter punch (his KO of Koscheck was a catch and shoot)
All of Woodley's big right hands and punch KOs come off of him coming forward
Woodley is 100% not skilled enough to counter Colby coming in
BUT if Colby is reckless there is a danger of him getting caught exchanging with Woodley in the pocket
IF he can't control the space and he backs up to Woodley, then he needs to be weary of Woodley's bullrushes (as Colby himself is not skilled enough to counter Woodley's predictable bullrushes)
I don't know if Colby can beat Woodley. Woodley has an insane TDD percentage and never loses to pure wrestlers
HOWEVER there is definitely a lot of similarities between Jake Shields vs Woodley - and Colby vs Woodley.
IF Colby is dead set on taking Woodley down, then he's going to lose.
IF Colby wants to win, his intention has to be, strike first, takedown second when it's there only opportunistically
He needs to do what Jake Shields did (wear him out on the fence, avoid the right hand/out strike him)
Keep Woodley on the fence and wear Woodley out. Never drop for the single. Woodley defends those and uses those to break away.
Colby needs to smoother Woodley in the clinch against the fence, then when he wants to strike, create space to land, then smoother again to shut down any return fire from Woodley
Colby has to dirty box. I want to see Colby put on a Randy like performance
On the feet, avoid the right hand. Simple enough. Here are specifics
Footwork is a good start. Step to the outside of Woodley's lead foot, and line up the left straights.
Utilize right hooks+pivots to not only circle Woodley toward the left straights, but to continually put himself out of line of Woodley's right hand (and out of position) while keeping the chin tucked behind the rear shoulder to deflect any rights just in case
You want to keep Woodly off set. Right hook and pivot out to Woodley's left side
And if he intends to jab to close in, to always be defensively responsible of the right hand response (orthodox vs southpaw)
And also mix up the speed of his jabs and fient to mix up. Would be beneficial to just straight up lead with the left when Woodley is expecting Colby to close distance behind a jab. Even bait Woodley's right hand with a pump jab/fake then dip low to his right as he counters inside of the right with a left.
Also look to counter Woodley's jabs with counter lefts (right hooks too)
The gameplan is there to easily exploit Woodley, and Colby 100% has the tools to accomplish every bit of it
Woodley knows this and this is why Woodley is trying to bait Colby into only going for takedowns/looking for takedowns
I'm really interested to see how Colby approaches this
You watch the Jake Shields fight and Colby is a way better striker with a better clinch game who has far more attributes then Jake. It shows you Colby is capable of winning decisively
