Woodley is not a counter puncher.

The times he rocked Wonderboy was via bull rushing and charging with his right hand

Then AFTER Wonderboy was already HURT, Woodley continued to rock Wonderbody via staying close and punching with him

Woodley has never KOd anyone with a counter punch (his KO of Koscheck was a catch and shoot)

All of Woodley's big right hands and punch KOs come off of him coming forward

Woodley is 100% not skilled enough to counter Colby coming in

BUT if Colby is reckless there is a danger of him getting caught exchanging with Woodley in the pocket

IF he can't control the space and he backs up to Woodley, then he needs to be weary of Woodley's bullrushes (as Colby himself is not skilled enough to counter Woodley's predictable bullrushes)

I don't know if Colby can beat Woodley. Woodley has an insane TDD percentage and never loses to pure wrestlers

HOWEVER there is definitely a lot of similarities between Jake Shields vs Woodley - and Colby vs Woodley.

IF Colby is dead set on taking Woodley down, then he's going to lose.

IF Colby wants to win, his intention has to be, strike first, takedown second when it's there only opportunistically

He needs to do what Jake Shields did (wear him out on the fence, avoid the right hand/out strike him)

Keep Woodley on the fence and wear Woodley out. Never drop for the single. Woodley defends those and uses those to break away.

Colby needs to smoother Woodley in the clinch against the fence, then when he wants to strike, create space to land, then smoother again to shut down any return fire from Woodley

Colby has to dirty box. I want to see Colby put on a Randy like performance

On the feet, avoid the right hand. Simple enough. Here are specifics

Footwork is a good start. Step to the outside of Woodley's lead foot, and line up the left straights.

Utilize right hooks+pivots to not only circle Woodley toward the left straights, but to continually put himself out of line of Woodley's right hand (and out of position) while keeping the chin tucked behind the rear shoulder to deflect any rights just in case

You want to keep Woodly off set. Right hook and pivot out to Woodley's left side

And if he intends to jab to close in, to always be defensively responsible of the right hand response (orthodox vs southpaw)

And also mix up the speed of his jabs and fient to mix up. Would be beneficial to just straight up lead with the left when Woodley is expecting Colby to close distance behind a jab. Even bait Woodley's right hand with a pump jab/fake then dip low to his right as he counters inside of the right with a left.

Also look to counter Woodley's jabs with counter lefts (right hooks too)

The gameplan is there to easily exploit Woodley, and Colby 100% has the tools to accomplish every bit of it

Woodley knows this and this is why Woodley is trying to bait Colby into only going for takedowns/looking for takedowns

I'm really interested to see how Colby approaches this

You watch the Jake Shields fight and Colby is a way better striker with a better clinch game who has far more attributes then Jake. It shows you Colby is capable of winning decisively

People will say he’s gotten better but if you look at Woodley s last 4 fights you can’t really gauge much. The Robbie fight ended quick. The Thompson and Maia fight were both 1 dimensional. We haven’t seen him in a good fight in a long time

Simple case and point . Colby is hittable and Woodley can win by KO. However Colby can just as easily outwork Woodley to a decision. Colby doesn't need to take him down just clinch up with him. He's a much more technical clincher than shields and woodley.

Don’t you ever disrespect K1 Shields like that

<bball1>

He was outstruck by marquardt, macdonald and shields people, dude is beatable and a clown talking GOAT talk , CLOWN!!tumblr_m77fomE0161qaa8d1o2_r1_500.gif

You should've kept on reading

"Woodley's KO of Koscheck was a CATCH AND SHOOT"

Nevermind all that. Even just for arguments sake

1. That was an old over the hill Kosheck

2. ONE EXCEPTION does not prove the rule.

tl;dr but I agree. Colby can win. His hugging game will overwhelm Tyron with affection and fill his heart with happiness and delight. Then the PPV sells will skyrocket as a wave of love will propagate through cables and air, forcing all the viewers to surrender to a feeling of fuzziness and warmth.

lol that was the most pathetic attempt at throwing a punch I've ever seen by a former contender . not impressive at all.
Seriously, when ever some one calls Woodley a good striker or a counter puncher I can't help but facepalm. That person knows nothing about fighting and is just going off the hype

Yep. Woodley is insanely over rated

Woodley is one of the least skilled, most one dimensional champs in modern history

Conor said it best

"Nothing but a short stock wrestler with an overhand right"

He has gotten better no doubt but he's gotten better at extending his gas tank and fighting the way he needs to.I totally agree with you and that is exactly how I feel...how will he do when pressured constantly now, cause we know he's looked like a deer in headlights before.

What does that say about the fighters that tried and failed to take the belt away from him? You have already commented on Woodley. Now comment on THEM!

The people who think Woodley is some type of nightmare matchup for Colby are the same people who thought RDA was going to whoop colby. Colby doesn't even need to take tyron down he can cage press for 5 rounds BJJScout already covered this on a Q&A . Plus Colby is a much more powerful and technical clincher than woodley and shields.

Colby will be clueless when Woodley pressures him. A guy like Colby doesn’t win on talent. He wins on insane work pace and cardio and pressure. His style will be nullified with forward pressure. Woodley wouldn’t take the fight if he knew he wouldn’t win. I’m sure he’s beat that ass more than he has Karyn

Isn't Marquardt a known drug cheat? I thought we devalued steroid cheats wins here? Or, is that only a rule for Jones?

Such a horrible fight.

If that fight is indication on how this Colby-Woodley fight is going to go then get your pillows ready.

And even for arguments sake, I told you that one exception does NOT prove the rule

Using the Jake Shields fight as analysis isn't an exception. Woodley has lost three times

And Woodley always fights the same ways and displays the same tendencies and habits that are easily exploited, that Colby can easily exploit. I simply talked about the details of a potential gameplan

You nitpicked the most irrelvant thing possible. There's something wrong with you isnt there?

And......some of you are the same people that said Woodley would get murked by Lawler or Wonderboy. So.....
