Journeyman or Gatekeeper?

Gatekeeper typically means someone who ensures non-champion men never fight for the championship.

So, does a gatekeeper garner more respect than a journeyman?

It’s:

Champion
Contender
Gatekeeper
Journeyman
Can
Bellator material

Gatekeeper looks better to me !
Gatekeeper is overrate ;)

Gatekeeper

It leaves open the possibility that you were once good

pretty damn spot on.
i would break gate keeper into 3 subs.
the gatekeepers of the belts (joe b)
top 5 gate keepers (cowboy aka not donald)
and top 10 gate keepers. (mike perry)

so champ
champ gate keeper
contender
top 5 gate keeper
top 10
journeyman
washed (pfl)
old and washed (bellator)

Gatekeeper > Journeyman

Gatekeeper = Still Relevant
Journeyman = Best days are behind you

Champion
Contender
Gatekeeper
Journeyman
Can
Bellator material
WWE material

I think we should add BKFC below bellator probably. And below that you gain the title of “conor training partner”.

Gatekeeper is more consistent but journeyman can probably surprise some top fighters just on experience, which is something that gatekeeper can't otherwise he wouldn't be a gatekeeper.

Gatekeeper means a top 5-15 fighter IMO, while a journeyman is a just bleed type with a slight winning record. E.G. Chris Leben was a journeyman.

champ
contender
gatekeeper
prospect
journeyman
can
novelty act (CM Punk, James Toney, etc)
Bellator contender

Undefeated Champion
Can

The rest are just variants on Can

To me they have different connotations. I consider someone a journeyman if they have been in the game a long time but are not really a contender. A gatekeeper is almost a contender, but not quite there.

Journeyman doesn't really indicate if they are good or bad, just that they are reliable. A gatekeeper, by definition is very good.

So gatekeeper is higher praise.

Leben was both a journeyman and a gatekeeper at various points in his career.
