Yes! I'm making a "French Movies" theme. I went with highly regarded flicks from their cinematic history (as always) As these Nominations are a bit old, I'm including a link to where you guys can watch them all online!;)

Candidates:

That Man from Rio (1964)

MV5BNWU3ZjBjMGUtYWYyMy00Zjg3LTgzNzUtMzk1MTMzM2U2YjhlXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMjQzMzQzODY@._V1_UY268_CR9,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Director: Philippe de Broca

Stars: Jean-Paul Belmondo, Françoise Dorléac, Jean Servais

Premise:
A young man comes to the rescue of his girlfriend abducted by thieves and brought to Rio. An extravagant adventure ensues.

Reason for Nominating:
Stars Jean-Paul Belmondo who is a powerhouse of charisma in what looks like a fun adventure movie.

The Silence of the Sea (1949)

MV5BMWJjM2ZkZTEtZDM0My00YzU2LWEzNTMtMWExNDY3OWNmYjlmXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMTQxNzMzNDI@._V1_UY268_CR4,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Director:
Jean-Pierre Melville

Stars: Howard Vernon, Nicole Stéphane, Jean-Marie Robain

Premise: Under Nazi occupation, an elderly Frenchman and his niece must board a German officer. As a form of resistance, they enter pact of silence when the officer is present. But as time passes, they realize he far differs from their expectations.

Reason for Nominating:
Debut movie of one of the all-time great directors and often regarded as one of the best first films of all time.

(No english trailer for this flick seems to exist)

Les Diaboliques (1955)

Director: Henri-Georges Clouzot

Stars: Simone Signoret, Véra Clouzot, Paul Meurisse

Premise: The wife and mistress of a loathed school principal plan to murder him with what they believe is the perfect alibi.

Reason for Nominating:
If a film is widely proclaimed as being equal to Hitchcock... then I'm interested.

Link: On Youtube. See next post.

Wages of Fear (1953)

MV5BZDdkNzMwZmUtY2Q5MS00ZmM2LWJhYjItYTBjMWY0MGM4MDRjXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNTA4NzY1MzY@._V1_UY268_CR1,0,182,268_AL_.jpg

Director:
Henri-Georges Clouzot

Stars: Yves Montand, Charles Vanel, Peter van Eyck

Premise:
In a decrepit South American village, four men are hired to transport an urgent nitroglycerine shipment without the equipment that would make it safe.

Reason for Nominating:
Some people claim that this movie is even better then William Friedkin's remake Sorcerer and I was like; "Nah, that can't be true."... but what if it actually is?

Also, we're now beginning a new cycle! Here are all the movies from the last one. Which ones did you like and which ones were duds?

The Witch
The Long Good Friday
Star Time
Ex Machina
Death Warrant
The Invisible Man
The Ghost and the Darkness
Support your Local Gunfighter
Enemy
Tremors
Papillon
The Lighthouse
Rocco and His Brothers

Les Diaboliques (1955) is on Youtube

I thought we were on a break at the end of the cycle? Did we decide against that? Its fine to me either way.

I really liked The Lighthouse, Ex Machina and Rocco and His Bros. Tremors and The Long Good Friday were two films I'd already seen and loved. Support Your Local Gunfighter was a good time too

Death Warrant was a surprising dud for me because I liked that movie as a kid

Looking forward to French week. One of the GOAT countries for cinema

The Lighthouse was epic.

The Invisible was shambolic.

I... don't think we ever reached a official decision on that.

Is this something people are up for?

For sure. They really get ignored in favor of Japan, Italy, Hong Kong, pretty much everyone. The attention France gets doesn't match its quality.

Tried to get Pepe Le Moko in there but this is the list I went with.

The Lighthouse was epic.

The Invisible was shambolic.

Just dropping in to say that this is an awesome fucking movie and IMO a top 10 directorial debut.

I'm thinking about watching the lighthouse and rocco this weekend possibly. not sure becuase the dog gave me an awesome leg sweep at the top of the stairs, chasing the cat, and thus throwing me skyward backwards falling to the tile cellar floor... hyper extending and then dislocating my elbow. Mauricio Rua vs. Marki Kohlmen style. I put it back in place almost immediately but still hurts a tad hahaha.

All films this Cycle ranked btw!

The Lighthouse so low on your list.... But why???

What in the fuck is @europe1 's fascination with making us watch a film from 1940's, 50's, or 60's every cycle.

This is Europe trying to get to the Cineplex when they run old as fuck films marathon.
