(sorry for making Godzilla look so retarded with that hat on)

FrontNakedChoke has decided to rehash two of his old nominations, pitting them in a deadly "Old Kids on the block vs New Kids on the block" showdown.... yeah thats the best I've got sorry.

Here are our candidates!

Drive (2011)

Director: Nicolas Winding Refn

Stars: Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston

Premise: A mysterious Hollywood stuntman and mechanic moonlights as a getaway driver and finds himself in trouble when he helps out his neighbor.

Why FrontNakedChoke Picked it: One of my favourite movies. Intense action scences and probably the GOAT soundtrack. Driver (Ryan Gosling) is a skilled Hollywood stuntman who moonlights as a getaway driver for criminals. I chose Drive because I always enjoy watching it and it has stuck with me since the first time I saw it.

The Town (2010)

Director: Ben Affleck

Stars: Ben Affleck, Rebecca Hall, Jon Hamm

Premise: As he plans his next job, a longtime thief tries to balance his feelings for a bank manager connected to one of his earlier heists, as well as the F.B.I. Agent looking to bring him and his crew down.

Why FrontNakedChoke Picked it: As he plans his next job, a longtime thief tries to balance his feelings for a bank manager connected to one of his earlier heists, as well as the F.B.I. Agent looking to bring him and his crew down. I chose The Town because it's an intense thriller with some good performances and comic relief.

Jacob's Ladder (1990)

Director: Adrian Lyne

Stars: Tim Robbins, Elizabeth Peña, Danny Aiello

Premise: Mourning his dead child, a haunted Vietnam War veteran attempts to uncover his past while suffering from a severe case of dissociation. To do so, he must decipher reality and life from his own dreams, delusions, and perceptions of death.

Why FrontNakedChoke Picked it: Jacob's Ladder follows Vietnam war veteran Jacob Singer through his post war struggles. I chose Jacob's ladder because it's one of the best psychological thrillers out there. The atmosphere is really creepy and the story is gripping (and also because I'm rehashing it from my last turn).

Mr Brooks (2007)

Director: Bruce A. Evans

Stars: Kevin Costner, Demi Moore, William Hurt

Premise: A psychological thriller about a man who is sometimes controlled by his murder-and-mayhem-loving alter ego.

Why FrontNakedChoke Picked it: Mr Brooks follows the double life of Earl Brooks. Intelligent and successful, Brooks is Man of the year by day, and serial killer by night. I chose this movie for because I feel it's a unique take on this genre. I thought there's a chance some of you haven't seen it (and I'm also rehashing it from last turn).

Top 5 favorite guilty pleasure movies. Hmm. . .

This is tough for me because I generally despise the term "guilty pleasure." I don't feel guilty about the movies I like and I also usually think the movies I like are good, albeit sometimes misunderstood by others.

For instance, I've seen movies like Mortal Kombat, Independence Day and Bloodsport described as "guilty pleasures" but I think those are legitimately good movies and I don't feel the least bit bad about liking them.

So what I'm going to do is put my thinking cap on and come up with five movies that I enjoy but don't actually think are very well-made films, or that I at least think are problematic on significant levels.

Let's see, here goes. . .

5. Jason X
4. Blade: Trinity
3. 2 Fast 2 Furious
2. Jurassic Park III
1. Resident Evil: Apocalypse

Alright, FrontNakedChokes top 5 for this week... "Favorite Guilty Pleasure Movies"

I was never really wise to the whole "Guilty Pleasure" concept. I guess I'd qualify it as a movie with little-to-no artistic/craftsmanship value and basically aims for a base, tawdry level of entertainment. But here goes...

And screw a Top 5! I'm doing a top 10! FrontNakedChoke ain't the boss of me! Buck it, sucka!

Not sure if all of these qualify though. There is a lot of grey zones with a theme like this.

1. She (1984)
2. Hell Comes to Frogtown
3. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky
4. Swiftblade Sisters
5. The Street Fighter
6. Deadlier than the Male
7. Tarkan vs the Vikings
8. Hercules vs Moloch
9. Deadly Prey
10. Every Single Goddamn Maria Montez movie ever filmed.

In contention: When Dinasaurs Ruled the Earth, Barbarella, Dolamite, Ring of Steel, The Bella Starr Story, Undefeatable, The Champions of Justice, The One-Armed Boxer, Kung Fu vs Yoga, The Sister of Ursula, Golden Queen Commandos, Stirba: She-Wolf Bitch, The Mask of Dr Fu Manchu, Amazons, Humonoids from the Deep, Conquest, All the Nemuri Kyoshiro films, Psychomania, Dial: Help, The Warrior and the Sorceress, The Ator 1 and 2, The Throne of Fire, Deathstalker 2, The Big Calamity.

Plus everything I've forgotten to mention...

Freaking Hercules vs Moloch, man. For a time I considered changing my AV to Moloch's wolf-mask. But decided not to since I hate when others change their profile pictures since it makes me forgot whom they are.

I’m not in the movie club but Drive is absolutely phenomenal.

I feel ya'. Gonna try my best here, though my reasons aren't consistent.
  • Real Men
  • The Princess Bride
  • Barton Fink
  • Up
  • Armageddon

Surprised you'd put Princess Bride, Barton Fink or Up on a guilty pleasures list.

One's a quintessential chick flick (more or less). One's a children's movie. And as for Barton Fink, that's the first Coen Brothers or Turturro film that springs to mind when they're mentioned. Nobody likes that film anywhere near as much as me. If I started a thread saying that was their best film I'd expect zero agreement. Although anymore even I might have to give the nod to Lebowski. Still doubt it'd get many 2nd place votes.

Yeah those are way to smart and well-made to be considered guilty pleasures.

Or at least I assume so, since I've only seen Princess Bride, which is bloody fantastic.

I'm always down for a good chick flick or family movie. No guilt required.

As for Barton Fink, there are several Coen films I'd put ahead of it but I do think it's a pretty good movie. Been many years since I last watched it at this point.

I went for the one I haven’t seen.

There’s one that I really hope doesn’t win.

Dude, everyone loves Princess Bride.

And if they don’t, they should be drug out into the street and shot.

Guilty pleasure movies. I base this list on movies I enjoy that seem to be panned by most people.

Honorable Mention: Over the Top
5) Freddy Got Fingered
4) Ernest Scared Stupid
3) Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives
2) Sudden Death
1) Rocky V

I actually just rewatched Princess Bride recently for the first time since I was a kid. I remembered almost nothing about it.

It's a damn good movie.

5) Freddy Got Fingered

Before I go to bed tonight -- I would just like to say -- that if I actually liked Freddy Got Fingered -- the I would never ever tell another human soul that I liked it -- or even tell a bush or a tree or a dog about that fact.
