SHERDOG MOVIE CLUB: Cycle 5 Wrap-Up

For you new guys, this is the thread where we talk about everything that's happened over the previous cycle and discuss any ideas we have for the Club.

If you want to rank the movies this cycle or provide any additional commentary, now is the time to do it. If you have any suggestions that might improve the Club experience, here's where to offer those.

Regarding the latter, it looks like @jeicex has some suggestions he'd like to put forward. I had intended to get the new voting thread up this week, but I guess I will post-pone until we've talked through his ideas and anyone else's.

Let's discuss!

Oh, for the record here are our films from this cycle:

Frozen River
Once Upon a Time in the West
Halloween
The Host
Chopper
Drugstore Cowboy
Observe and Report
Ain't Them Bodies Saints
Diner
Heathers
Tuff Turf
Whiplash

I'm good with how things are. Only thing that comes to mind is requiring everyone who voted for the winning selection to view and post about it.

Ok, an idea I mentioned in the Whiplash thread that I thought I'd run by you all again is a potential theme for our movie picks this next cycle. We have a bunch of ideas:

1) Everyone adheres to a particular theme this season, and we decide what that is
2) We all pick a theme for each week in the voting thread for next week
3) The person who makes the picks on this week chooses the theme for the next week's picks.
4) Leave it as it is
5) ???
6) Profit

For example, we could all choose SPX's theme for his picks this coming week, and then next week, he picks what europe1 would have to follow, and I'd get to then follow that up inside the mindframe of europe1, and so on. Hoo boy that could be amusing.

If I gotta choose movies based on themes decided by others I'll just bow out. I don't understand why people would want others telling them what they're allowed to nominate. Being able to vote out of four choices seems like enough input for club members. Requiring a theme is fine. Dictating it not so much.

Mmm, sounds like it could be fun, but not fun enough to actually give up the freedom we have to pick what we want. When our week rolls out, that's the one time when each member actually has full autonomy to express themselves.

It's supposed to be a fun idea to stretch out of our comfort zone. It's not a strict criteria to force members into submission or anything so dramatic as you put it. Plus, if someone didn't want to participate in that, they wouldn't have to. It's an open movie club on a karate forum, not some dictatorship.

So you're saying we recommend a theme to the next member and then they can either follow it or tell you to fuck off? So the theme is just a suggested theme with no actual obligation attached?

Given that cubo threatened to quit the club based on this seemingly light hearted suggestion, I'd say. I, along with the others that chimed in the discussion in the Whiplash thread, thought it could be fun.

I think I agree that it needs to be a recommendation, but actually trying to force people to comply could get messy.

I mean, if I pick the theme "great underdog sports movies" and the next guy has no interest in sports or sports movies, then he's not going to be down for that shit.

Well of course, but our thoughts weren't nearly as specific or aggressive of theme ideas as that. It wouldn't be like "movies about the godfather" or "movies with this actor in them" or "movies directed by this guy" or "movies you watched with an ex". It wouldn't be an exercise in frustration, but something to make us think. It would be more like "movies you grew up watching but haven't seen in many years" or "movies you've never seen but always meant to watch" or "your all-time favorites". My intention for the suggestion was to make it still fairly open-ended.

I've said it time and time again, and it's been echoed by other members, but the best thing I've gotten from this club is that it's made me think and approach movies that I wouldn't have normally approached.

And the idea was never to force members to do something they didn't want to do. That's just silly.

I'm fine with the way things are, we've finished five solid phases of films over the past 86 weeks, and I just thought it would be fun to shake things up. If others disagree, fine by me.

I was halfway through the voting post when I saw your comment and put the breaks on.

I'm going to go ahead and run my picks but we can keep discussing.

Your post doesn't indicate to me that adhering to the theme would be optional. Looked at it three times now too. As for stepping out of our "comfort zones", isn't that what watching movies picked by the other 11 members does?

But hey, if people wanna suggest themes that's fine with me. I've already got a few I'm workin' on.

I do not think that anyone should be coerced into a theme. This is a movie-club that is meant to be fun, after all. Following a theme should be completely voluntary. That said, I'm all on the idea.

Alternatively, we could have that all the members could nominate a theme (nomination happening in the voting-thread). The lucky member of the week will then have to pick one of these themes brought forth in the voting-thread (or just ignore them if that is the persons fancy).

and I'd get to then follow that up inside the mindframe of europe1,

Here's another concern. . .

How many themes are there really? It seems we'd run out of theme ideas relatively quickly.

I guess that all depends on how punctilious we are willing to be, both as pickers and as nominators.

Here's an idea I've been considering for a while:

We should do a contest. I'm not sure what form exactly it would take, but it would probably be something like box office prediction or something else along those lines.
