Seriously: Is Weidman just better than AS or did AS just get old?

The weird thing about Anderson's career is that his takedown defense really developed as he got older. When he was "in his prime" he was very susceptible to wrestlers and I think Weidman would have been able to grapple him to a decision or finish. After the first Sonnen fight, Silva was already starting to slow down and get tagged more (by Chael, Bonnar) but he also developed some of the best takedown defense at middleweight.

So which Silva do you put up against a guy like Weidman? The younger, quicker Anderson with no TDD or the older, battle-worn Silva with great TDD?

But Weidman never beat Silva on the ground?? so i dont see how this would make a difference??

Weidman is a bad match up for Anderson plus Anderson is old. It's a combo of both but Weidman probably would have beat him at any age because he can mix things together well and defend submissions, unlike someone like Sonnen.

There was never a version of Anderson that matched up well with Weidman. He's strong in all of Anderson's weaknesses and good enough at judging timing and distance to give Anderson fits in his own strengths.

However 'better' is pretty subjective. There are guys Weidman will/would struggle with that Anderson would have blitzed.

My point is that Weidman would probably beat any version of Silva in my opinion. A young Silva was prone to takedowns while an older Silva... we saw what happened there.

I'm gonna go with Weidman is just a better fighter. He's one of the most well rounded fighters that Anderson ever fought. I truly believe he would beat Silva at any time of his career because of his skill and physical attributes such as reach. The scary part is that he's not even in his prime yet.

What's the difference? He beat AS. Twice. That's all that is to it.

it's amazing how fedor gets away with being old for his losses but anderson got beat by the better fighter... Lol typical sherdog

Maybe that's because Weidman's a beast and Bigfoot is meh.

When Werdum beat Fedor we saw it as a very legitimate loss. He got caught and submitted. When Bigfoot beat him too, that's when we started to consider that he's just old.

I'm sure if Diaz beats Silva people will say he's just old too. Cuz there's no way in hell Silva should lose to Nick.

eh... 2008-2009 Anderson was a beast and that was where he was at his absolute best, and imo I think he would have beaten Weidman back then. dude you gotta think the guy is almost 40yrsold, and if youre a big fan of silva like me, and youve watched all his MMA bouts, you'll be able to tell the difference between fighting hendo in 2008 to fighting Weidman in 2013, Silva looked so much slower, and less precise.

I love Hendo, but to be fair Weidman is a more complete/well rounded and more disciplined fighter than Hendo is. Not saying his resume matches Hendo's yet or anything like that, but Weidman uses his wrestling/grappling more effectively, game plans better and shows a more diversified striking game than Henderson does.

I agree man, Weidman is a more well rounded and probably better fighter then Hendo period, we dont know for sure yet, but its looking like the case.

but if you watch both of those fights, watch Silva's striking being really average against Weidman, then watch Silva vs Hendo or Irvin and its almost black and white difference.

c'mon man, Anderson is 40yrsold and weidman is 30, 10 years difference.

Anyone that attempts to suggest that Anderson's age did not play a significant role in their fights is a fool.

They were flukes.

I'm 10x more impressed with CW's Machida victory than I am with both Silva wins combined.

I have issue with comparing fighters from different generation.

BINGO!! Anderson was from the specialist era , where as Weidman's the "new breed" jack of all trades fighter.

Anderson Silva is Fking Old School.

Combination to be honest.

Weidman is a superb fighter and would pose a lot of problems to prime Silva.

He could still beat him too, but it's unlikely in the same dominant fashion.

Bang. Weidman would've given Silva a hell of a fight even during his "prime"(imo circa 2009) but Silva was getting old, he was hit by Bonnar for Chris' sake, and at that point he was just a lamb for the slaughter even if we didn't realize it at all.
