Serious question, how would you go about defending yourself against a trained attack dog (Doberman etc).

Let's say you start off with a bit of distance (say 5 metres) between you and the dog , then the dog started running towards you growling and barking and drooling like a demon hound.

What would you do ?

first off... accept that your going to get bitten... and its going to hurt alot... :icon_twis

now... dogs are not like other wild animal in the fact that they are not going to go for the throat... wolves and lions, tigers and such will always attack the throat first..

dogs will instinctivly go for whatever is closest to them... that's why you see police dog training vids of the guy wearing the protective suite.... the arms are the most heavily padded..

they do that because its instinct for use to raise our arms to protect the face... so the dog goes for the arm as its the closest body part to them...

example-

now in a self-defense situation, you can use that to your advantage... if you have a jacket or sweater... quickly take it off and wrap it around your forearm of your off hand...

when the dog attacks... let him first bite you on said protected (hopefuly!) forearm... then immediately try to grab his head/body and pull it into you close...DO NOT, I REPEAT, DO NOT try to pull your arm or whatever he has in his mouth away from the dog... this is where most of the damage happens.

the closer you are to the dog and the more control you can have over his head, body and movements the less you will get injured... it will not be good if he gets a mouthfull of you and starts pulling away and ripping hunks of flesh off of you... you do not want it to start pulling away on you!

I should say first that if you can get some kind of weapon, that will be much better... even a pen or some keys in your fist, a strong stick, stone, ect will hopefully keep him away from you long enough for you to hurt the dog enough or get somewhere safe..

ok.. so hes got a mouthful of forearm... you've grabbed the head... now push your arm/hand deeper into its jaws while holding the head... this will prevent him from biting down harder.. then try and jam your thumbs into the eye sockets, ears, grabbing the throat and squeezing really hard, hitting the throat.. Ive even heard of guys grabbing the upper and lower jaw and pulling them apart... tearing and breaking the jaw bones...

if your hand gets into his mouth, then thats actually better because you will now force your hand down its gullet and start ripping out anything inside of the dog... and choking it.

for a good example of what a typical dog attack looks like and what NOT to do... check this vid out..

nice post.

I don't think falling down is a good idea. They get leverage and you lose weapons.

Of course the best answer is to use Muy Thai.

I heard alls you have to do is turn your body to the side, and the dog loses interest.

If not, you can allways thai round kick him to the outter thai.

this.

Never use TMAs against pitbulls. they are worthless in the ring, street, and even against raging dogs. Stick with MT. you have the clinch elbows etc.

that would be true if you were faster than the dog... most people are not... and striking a dog is kinda risky considering if you swing at it... it will chomp on your hand... you have to understand its an animal.. humans will back away from a punch... a dog will not...
sure... you might clock it real good and send him away but how damaged will your hand be...? I'd rather get stitches than get a cast for broken bones...

Kicking the dog is good as well but the risk is if he grabs your calf or thigh and starts pulling and tearing away... lots of blood will be lost and it will be hard to get control of the dog if hes farther down on your leg vs closer to your hands...

think more gnp than muay thai...

I think he was being sarcastic

When a dog has bitten down on your leg the best thing (I've heard) is to hit it as strong as you can on the top of the head.

I use to raise pits and if they start geting fiesty a good punch right in front of the ears normaly huts them, on top of the head they just look at you like youre stupid. I would say that first post is pritty on point for most breeds of dogs. don't try to kick em and try like hell to keep them off of your legs. try to take the bites on your non dominate arm. best thing to do is take their bottom jaw one way and the top jaw the other way then try to twist there head off. or you could just throw em a hot dog......oh and a not so known fact. If a pit bull is shaking on something, if you trap his back legs between yours (stratle theme) theyll quit shaking, then its only a matter of making them let go. I guess this is more for if your dogs geting attacked by a pit but its usefull to know and Ive never seen it not work.

I saw a story about a kid who RNC'd a dog who was attacking his friend. And it worked! *EDIT: Thanks to DrBdan for the link*
I think the most important thing is to face the dog head on (don't turn your back), use lateral movement (like a bull fighter), and attack it from the side with a soccer kick to the belly, throat, or testicles (really). If you can find a stick or some weapon, use it to keep distance (like a lion tamer and chair). A few solid whacks to the head will make a dog keep its distance. A dog will bite a stick if you put it in its mouth. You can use the stick to leverage the dog to roll over and try to pin it down. If it get's too close, eye poke or grab the throat with a free hand. Above all, be ready to kill the dog if it is attacking you. This mental block is going to be the hardest to overcome.

Just to clarify. Dobermans are known to go for the throat. Having owned dogs my entire life I know how to deal with them and conduct myself around them and therefore have never been attacked *knocks wood*. I've had dogs run at me to attack but I usually dont give them the time of day and just leave their space, avoid eye contact and stay very calm. What you have to understand is that although they may not have a particulary developed means of verbal communication (such as humans or dolphins) all animals communicate via body language. Watch the dog whisperer, he's legit.

However, if I was attacked by a dog I would time it and

KNEE!!! oiiiieeeeyy!

If your attacked by a pet dog there's a chance you can fight it off.
If your attacked by a trained 'attack' dog (ie police, military, security) than your fucked.

You can punch, kick, knee, grapple etc all you want.
You will get ripped up.

My brother and I got attacked by two dogs in 8th grade. They bit the fuck out of him and he had to go to the hospital, a dog bit at me but only got my shirt. Then we backed up and a car scared them off and picked us up.

I wouldn't advise fighting a dog even if you get some solid punches/kicks in your gonna get bit, but best of luck to you.

It seems like the RNC has been popular lately for dog attacks, take that for what its worth.

Also if your going against something like a Caucasian Mountain Dog your fucked if you don't have some sort of large weapon.

Stand your ground. Give the dog a target to hit. When it goes to hit it break it's neck. You got to be fast. It can be done.

The obvious answer is leg lock it. You see, unlike a human, dogs have 4 legs instead of two. So it's twice as easy to hit a leg lock. I'd go for a kneebar, or a pawhook if I was feeling nasty.

This is a nice one. We can armbar or knee bar two limbs, preferably on the same side and see how they run

With a tall dog, you go for a brutal throat strike.

This.

As a private person, you can get normal training for a dog, which uses the play instinct of the animal to make him do certain things (which may include attacking someone).

A real attack dog is trained completely different, they use his feral instincts and aggression to train him. A military/police attack dog is a killer out-and-out, and nothing other than a large caliber bullet will stop him from tearing you to shreds. You won't mistake those fuckers for Lassie, that's for sure.

But even an untrained, freaked out shepherd, rottweiler, dobermann, or any of the bigger molossers will fuck you up big time and there's nothing you can do about it.

People always talk about Pitbull Terriers, but they're actually relatively small and although they are incredibly tough, strong and fierce dogs, they are surely not the worst thing that can happen to you in the canine world.
