I am going to go to the BJ Penn seminar here in Portland, Oregon on Sunday. What should I expect from a seminar? It is 4 hours long...are we going to be instructed the whole time? Do I plan on wrestling at all? Should I bring my notebook? Any input would be appreciated.

I'm sure you're going to listen a lot, roll some, maybe even roll with BJ a bit. Maybe you can take notes. Some seminars allow it, some do not. Most of all just have fun and keep your ears open --- it should be great to hear what BJ says.

I didn't have a chance to catch his class while I was in Kona but got to meet him...so going to this seminar is my way of making up for missing that class I wanted to be in. Nobody else here goes/has been to seminars?

I'd say expect 3 and a half hours of technical training and then a line up of people getting to roll with Penn for the last half hour.

just go, learn al you can. you gotta eat sleep and breathe this , or you will never get good im giving you the best advice of your life.

I have been to many seminars over the years (JJ Machado, Pedro Sauer, Dan Inosanto, Chai Sirisute, Guru Rick Faye, and others). Alot of the time the instructor will bring some of his higher ranking students and they will watch you roll and you can roll or spar with them as well, if they do come, then pick their minds as well as they more than likely have been with the head instructor for several years or more and will have alot to offer.

Usually around noon they will break for lunch which sometimes is catered or they have bag lunches for you which was included in the seminar cost, this is also a good time to meet the other participants and ask questions etc.

Just have an open mind and have fun, after all, that is what it is all about.

Definately bring a notebook man. We recently had a semenar with John Stutzman, Jorge Gurgels only blackbelt. The dude is freak'n awsome and he's probubly the coolest guy i've ever met. He would walk around and take the time to correct anything you would ask him to. I took about 7 pages of notes on a 5 hours semenar. Just go in there ready to learn and have the notebook handy.

I've been to 2 seminars. The first one was 4 hours of instruction. The second one was 3 of instructions and 1 hour of free sparring. I got to roll with Fabio Clemente, the person giving the seminar, too, which was cool. I prefer the second style, more.

Alright, cool, thanks guys. I'm pretty excited. It is tommorow so I will let you know how it goes.

My parents are paying for it since they know I like BJ Penn a lot :D

Have fun and bring a notebook.

Some people like writing it down right as they do it, but I wait till afterwards to let it all sink in, then I write it down.
