I just got a Saturn for my birthday, which was a pretty sweet gift. It seems like a lot of the good games are super expensive in the US versions though.

Should I mod my Saturn through the hardware route, or should I get an Action Replay cartridge? It seems like it mods the code to unlock region games.

Also, some suggestions for games would be awesome. I got virtua fighter, fighting vipers, daytona, gex, and SF movie. I'm looking into getting Die Hard Arcade as well.

Get an Action Replay that can play Capcom games that require the expansion pack.

Virtua Cop is good when you have a CRT television so you can have your guns.

Luckily, my friend gave me her CRT television before she moved away. Too bad my brother is in the room with that television. He doesn't even use it and I have nowhere to put it.

Guardian Heroes and Radiant Silvergun, but they're both expensive.

Princess Crown was a good action/RPG, but it's in Japanese. Odin Sphere for PS2 is the spirital successor.

I loved my Saturn back in the day. The best game on Saturn (besides maybe Panzer Dragoon RPG, never got a chance to play that :( ) was Dragon Force

Guardian Heroes was also amazing, but I think you can get that on the 360 now. The Panzer Dragoon games are a must. Those 3 are the ones I would consider must owns.

If you like JRPG's, Albert Odyssey was pretty good. There was also Shining Wisdom, a decent Zelda clone. Blazing Heroes and Iron Storm are both good tactics games, though the graphics maybe be hard to stomach today.

    Anything made by Working Designs:

    Albert Odyssey: Legend of Eldean
    Dragon Force
    Iron Storm
    Magic Knight Rayearth
    Shining Wisdom

    For fighting games:

    Fighter's Megamix
    Virtua Fighter Kids
    Fighting Vipers
    Last Bronx
    Nightwarriors: Darkstalkers Revenge
X:Men - Children of the Atom (Japanese version is better)
In fact, if you're getting it modded any of the import fighting games on the Saturn would be highly recommended.

    From Sega exclusively:

Panzer Dragoon (I, II and Saga)
    Burning Rangers
Shining Force III Ep. 1 (Ep.2 and 3 are import only)
    Dark Savior
    Guardian Heroes
    Virtua Cop I, II
    House of the Dead

Good luck finding these. Torrents will probably be your best friend as finding physical copies are hard (and expensive).

Unfortunately, not. Most of the Saturn's best games never made it to the states.

No need to mod your system, unless you wanna play back-ups and kill your laser lens. First thing I'd do is buy a Action Replay cart. Just make sure you get the 4M Plus version, because you'll need the extra ram for a few imports. That way you can buy some of the Japanese counterparts to many of the more expensive US games and save some money. Also, there are a TON of awesome games that never made it to the States. If you like shoot'em ups, beat'em ups, and fighting games, you're gonna be in heaven.

just be prepared to open your wallet, if you want to own many of the really decent games.

I recently picked up Deep Fear for the Saturn. It's a pretty cheap import and is a surprisingly good survival horror game. The text is mixed with English and Japanese (mostly English) and all the voices are in English. Surprised it never made it to the States.

I'm curious to see if any of the Japanese RPGs have English subtitles. I'd like to get a game like Grandia if I can get English subtitles out of it.

I think Policenauts had a English patch for it, but most of the good RPG's have fan made translations that you'll have to print out or view on a laptop, while playing the game.

Sucks that Grandia never made it to the States, because the Saturn version is widely regarded as the best version, graphically and frame-rate wise. I guess the US fans can thank Bernie Stolar and his policy of no JRPGs being allowed state-side. If that dufus wasn't put in charge of SOA, the Saturn could have been a killer system. He single handedly killed the Saturn with the botched launch, kept so many awesome titles away from the US with his head scratching policies, and drove away Working Designs.

Stolar wasn't president when they released it early.
The majority of the blame should be directed at Sega of Japan for focusing on making the Saturn a 2d machine with half assed 3d. It's not like obscure games like Grandia and Radiant Silvergun would've saved it here anyhow.

Man, Saturn was good. panzer Dragoon Saga is the GOAT in my opinion.

Anyone play Fighting Vipers vs Virtua Fighter?

I can't remember what I played Solar Eclipse on, either Saturn or CD. It was my favorite shooter.

A lot of good suggestions already made in this thread. Be sure to check out Saturn Bomberman, too. Probably the best Bomberman game ever made.
