Seattle Area sparring partners needed desperately

Mike also has a problem that he's usually surrounded by bag bullies with sever cases of chicken-shititis.

pussies in Seattle? NO! (I'm from Portland and use to live in Seattle- bigger pussies in Portland)

Hey I'm just relaying what he's told me, and it's not much different than some of the Gym climates here. Everyone's a Superstar until they have to spar a guy who is better than them continuously. Get beat up a little bit and all of a sudden "hey you wanna spar?"..."er uh, I can't man I have (insert horseshit excuse here)"...

I'm surprised there's nobody there for you to spar with. Are you that much better than everyone else? No offense meant.

Yes, at kickboxing and standup in general I am. The instructors are better than I am, but that's about it. The gym is made up of guys who are great grapplers but are barely competent on the feet. It's strange because most of the pro's that come through come in to work on their striking.

I used to get my ass kicked there on a regular basis but all the big guys who were better than me left.

KK is right, I have some sort of reputation at my gym.

It's become so dumb that a lot of the amateur mma fighters won't spar me in standup anymore. They dont' even try to make excuses anymore, they basically say "yeah i'm too chicken to spar you/i don't want you to kick my ass". Even in front of people they say that crap! It makes me sick, some people have no nuts.

Actually, Portland is FULL of the exact opposite of what KK was talking about. Well, maybe not exact, but the "bag-bullies" down here are not afraid at all to step in and spar/fight. The problem is they are all head down, no technique (and don't care), swing for the fences type idiots and someone almost always gets injured sparring with them. No control whatssoever.

Thats almost exclusively from the "MMA gyms" that have sprouted up around here like weeds though. There are a few stand-up/MT based gyms in the area that have plenty of controled, willing people in that weight range though. We actually get a few of the pros from the area in the gym when they want to get away from the "go all out" sparring at their own MMA gyms and just work clean, stand-up only sparring/timing and technique.

i wish i was near by to spar with you, you seem good.

i train in SF and over time have learned to be the most controlled and friendly 205 pounder ever, ill spar and fight anybody but it does suck not to have an abundance of people in your weight class. I train in Colorado during the school year and have a lot more big people to train with there but it is still tough to get decent and controlled big guys.

People like that are so annoying. I love uppercutting them :D

noone wants to get it handed to them, not in standup or grappling; it's human nature after sparring/training for awhile u may know that your not the best, you start getting comfortable in the fact that you can hang or get your shots in. NOONE wants to get blasted out or owned, it effects their perception of themselves and their abilities, cus they don't want to go back to the days of getting dominated.

secondly even if you are ok w/being beat; you don't wanna get it handed to you in front of people who know you; cus your afraid of them dissing you or questioning your skills or making fun of u

EXAMPLE- i have made at least 2-3 threads where i shared experiences where i tested my standup w/guys who were pretty good etc; an in alot of them i got beaten, but i was then flamed and insulted by alot of people who read them. I can only imagine what would happen if someone saw the video of it, i would probably get laughed off the forum; but it wouldn't bother me so much, cus i understand a)im not the best and b)everyone can and will lose...

some people don't have that mindset- i don't blame them for not wanting to get beaten; but i do blame them for not doing what it takes to get better or being too selfish/scared to not help someone else get better and finally acting tough, but not having the guts to back it up.

Mike:

Have you tried calling Rich Guerin? I just bought a house so I haven't been down there in a couple of weeks. Not sure what they're getting ready for or who's available right now. Might be worth the trip down and somebody might be able to put you up for a couple days.
