I was the dummy for a coach at a gym i have only been about one month and I was gonna throw a 1,2 and the coach was gonna dodge, pivot and counter, the thing is that during the demonstration the coach actually makes physical contact with his bareknuckle fist to my ribs and one day later im still hurting, there is a point of extension of the chest be it by breathing, twisting extending etc where its a nagging pain.

I dont think its to bad but i have no idea, my guess would be that withing 10 days or so that im at 80% pain free since it has only been one day and it hasnt gotten any worse.

I just wonder, because to me this is messed up for a coach to make that type of concact, knuckle to ribs, it wasnt a full force punch but still i feelt it, this wasnt a tap, kind of a reckless punch for a demonstration.
The thing you'd might expect from a beginner, there is no going back now because the thing allready happend.

Martial artis and boxing is a mecca for these types of psycopaths and especially if the are in coaching positions so that might be the thing, my guess.
I plan on confronting this coach soon and tell him he was out of line and he isnt fit to do anymore demos with me.

Any experience with this type of thing, the rib thing or coaches being reckless bareknuckle assholes?

lmao @ user name and complaining about getting punched once.

Martial arts is a game of millimetres. There will always be some slight errors in judgement/control. I guess the question is whether this coach does that as a normal or semi-normal thing? When you explain to him the effect it had on you, did he apologise and take you seriously or dismisses it and ridicules you? You can't find that out without talking to your coach about it.

Just suck it up mate. If it's a respectful gym then I doubt he's a "psychopath" as he'd have no students.
End of the day mate it's combat sport, not a tickling contest.

I don't think martial arts is for you tbh, your reaction to a "nagging pain" after your coach miss judged his control on a demo is very OTT.

It happens, it's not personal, I wouldn't confront him if I was you.

If you don't want to get touched while learning a combat sport then there are lots of McDojo schools about that only do out of distance sparring and teach tecniques by standing in line punching thin air

you know what you remind me of? the fire sauce from taco bell... weak...

suck it up buttercup. if he had put some mustard into his punch, you woulda been on the ground really crying like a lil biatch. the people who he had been demonstrating it for would have called him out on that as well if it had been too hard. my guess is you are soft. toughen up and stop being so sensitive...

It happens- i wouldn't take it personal.

I've lost count how many times I've been accidentally hit during a demo. If you're training to fight- you're going to get hit and it's not going to feel good so just take it as a learning experience. Though i remember one time we were practicing elbows at the gym and a girl was practicing on one of the assistants, she got a bit overzealous and nailed him right above the eye if i remember correctly(suppose to stop prior to contact i assume) and split him wide open...bleeding everywhere.

He was pretty upset lol. But these things happen-it's the fight game.

If it's a once off, I'd let it slide. It happens. I have coaches that make contact on demonstrations. It's usually as a joke, but if it hits the wrong spot/you're expecting it/breath at the wrong time it's gonna hurt. Since I've known them for so long, I'm just ready for whatever they might throw now lol.

My wife actually left a gym because of stuff like this happening though. She had to move gyms because of of work and wanted to go somewhere closer to home. So after looking around she joined a primarily boxing gym nearby to take in the group classes (all she wanted to do tbh). She said she was coming from another gym (which is highly reputable) and she had half decent form so the instructors started using her to demonstrate. In the 6 months she was there she had to go to A&E a few times and it was always the same dumb shit with demonstrations from instructors that had 50-60lbs on her. Some of the lowlights:

  • Broken thumb nail/badly sprained thumb. The thumbnail doesn't sound too bad until you see the blood squirting everywhere. They were showing parry --> counter. Got her to throw a jab so she throws a slow ass jab as a demonstration and the big giant parry just comes in over the top at full force/speed
  • Sprained wrist. Showing combos/basic pad holding. I can't remember if it was the jab or the hook. They get her to throw one of them. She does them, slowly. The pad holder comes out and meets the punch full force slapping the other way. Bends the wrist backwards. Yeah sure, she can wear some of the blame for throwing something lazy, but pad holders are there to catch a punch, not necessarily push back, especially when you have a huge size advantage
  • Shoulder injury. Same thing as above but in reverse. She's the pad holder. A few combos come in slow and she just goes at that pace then for no rhyme, reason or warning one would come in at full force
They suspended her membership for 3 months while she couldn't train (physio wouldn't clear her) and she wanted to can it because it was unsafe. They stuck to the contract and charged her the last 3 months even when they showed her all the injury reports. In the end she just said f it, take the money and good luck with your business if this is how you're going to treat people

It must be an accident, no coach would intentionally do that.

Yeah i talked wth the coach and he was aware that it happend and we are on the same page now about it,
It's just, damn it when these things happen, it messes as much with your head as it does with your actual pain/injury.
still feel a bit sore at some extensions but the pain is all but gone, whew, happy ending.
I was just gonna go on vacation and really didnt want to deal with an injury.
but it seems to be all good now! dodge a bullet really! so happy!

Congrats, you now have the reputation of being the gym pussy. Oh no, the coach hit you in the ribs with a controlled punch! There was some pain and shit -- that's not supposed to be a part of combat sports, right? Right??

I really fucking hate that whole "entitled paying customer" attitude. "Confronting the coach and telling him he isn't fit to do any more demos with me" and calling him a psychopath... Jesus. I bet he smiled in your face just to keep your business and then laughed his ass off with his buddies later on.

Gyms where you have to earn your right to be there are so much better than these "have to be nice to everyone and keep the Customer Service smile on" gyms with, uhm, "fighters", like the TS.

Accidents happen, and getting whacked in the ribs with a controlled punch, even if it had a bit more bite than intended, is normal as fuck. It's martial arts, not daycare.

Should've touched them with the jab or fill the gym with uppercuts

Times will be tough, persistence will get you through...or else just go join a plant fitness class.

When you train combat sports, you always have minor injuries. Wether it's a leg kick that hurts the next day, you kicked and your toe slammed against an elbow, your shin hurts because it was checked against a knee, black eye, finger gets hurt in grappling, etc.

Get used to it.
