Progressives want Joe Biden to unleash what they call “beast mode” executive power, and the Schumer-Manchin tax bill supplies the cash to turn the Internal Revenue Service into Wolverine.
The pact between Sen. Joe Manchin and Majority Leader Chuck Schumer includes $80 billion in new funding for the tax man. Democrats claim this “investment” will yield more than $200 billion in revenue. That estimate is highly speculative, but if it’s anywhere close to right IRS auditors will soon be coming after tens of millions of Americans.

The $80 billion is more than six times the current annual IRS budget of $12.6 billion. The money will be ladled out over nine years and comes with few strings attached. The main Democratic command is for the tax agency to bring the hammer down on taxpayers. The bill earmarks $45.6 billion for “enforcement,” including “litigation,” “criminal investigations,” “investigative technology,” “digital asset monitoring” and a new fleet of tax-collector cars. The result will be far more audits, civil suits and criminal referrals.

The main targets will by necessity be the middle- and upper-middle class because that’s where the money is. The Joint Committee on Taxation, Congress’s official tax scorekeeper, says that from 78% to 90% of the money raised from under-reported income would likely come from those making less than $200,000 a year. Only 4% to 9% would come from those making more than $500,000.
The IRS knows the super-wealthy employ lawyers and accountants who make litigation time-consuming and risky. It also knows that Democrats would howl if the agency pursues fraud in the earned-income tax credit program, despite what the IRS has estimated are $18 billion in improper payments each year.

Ok? Follow the law and don’t cheat on your taxes.

Right now they’re so underfunded, they don’t go after anyone with a lawyer to combat them, so they just focus on poor and middle class. Switching it to go after 200k+ Upper mid class and rich folk would help lower the burden on the middle of middle class.

I got audited while working internships where I made 25k that year. I paid all my taxes but because I lived in 4 different states while working and being a student it looked sketchy, so I had to provide proof I lived in all the states I did, so that it didn’t look like I was ducking about $500 in state taxes.

What is the point in going after a 20 year old for potentially $500? So many bigger fish to fry that are using loopholes inappropriately.

Man, 200k is NOT upper middle class. You have the right thinking but make it 750k plus and we could agree. Anything else? Fuck the IRS.

would be interesting to see the numbers of whre the missing tax dollars are. I'd assumed it was the superrich like Buffet and his whole "my secratary pays more taxes than I do".

Good, just comply and pay your taxes, you will be fine.
<{cruzshake}>

More like the let’s raise your taxes to pay for horseshit and then raise your taxes more so that we can fine you more if you aren’t paying for the other horseshit we raised your taxes for. Taxation is theft and this just gave the thieves more firepower.

Go after high earners leave regular people alone.

It’s your own fault if it’s spent on bullshit, that’s why you vote. I agree they should also go after the high earners, but that doesn’t dismiss “regular” people to be hold accountable for not complying.

Different places of living I guess. 200k in the country goes a very long way. That’s the guy with a house on the hill with pillars and a boat for skiing/cruising and another hefty boat for fishing where I’m from.

Yes, because libertarians could be elected.

Both parties SUCK and hurt the middle class. Can’t you even agree that taxes are insane to pay for war and other misappropriation?

That’s fine but it’s not the case in any urban area

So let the wealthy bureaucrats squeeze the American middle and lower classes for a theoretical 200 billion in revenue when these motherf.. in Washington with Ds and Rs next to their names are giving away trillions to other countries.

Has there ever been a time here when you weren't shilling for utter stupidity?

Yep this. As usual @So Fresh getting reamed. He likes it though and probably calls you daddy in pms and asks you to pull his hair.

it's based on tax brackets. 200k is roughly where income starts getting hit at higher rates like 24-32%. I imagine they did some analysis and found that to be the "sweet spot" for enforcement. Also it's very relative to where you live. Goldsboro, NC 200k is way up there but 200K in NYC is not going to go as far.

Wait... How is this the Schumer/Manchin bill? Is there no-one else involved? Did they draft the majority of it? Serious question - I might be missing something.

They've been auditing Trump for over a decade. It's about time the middle class feel what it's like to be a victim of the Deep State. Trump bless.
