Just to let you know, I doubt I've watched more than 10-15 seconds of the Schmo at one time. Then again, I don't really watch any MMA journalism except for parts of clips posted here on Sherdog.

Some MMA journalists get a lot of criticism around here, especially Ariel. But I understand the Ariel hate (though I don't hate him myself). It's because he tries to incite people, and because he complains a lot, and because a lot of people don't sympathize with his disputes with Dana and the UFC. But the Schmo is different.

The Schmo seems to be the second most hated MMA journalist on Sherdog. Why? Because people say he's fake, and they despise his goofball shtick. To some extent, I get that, but not really. I mean, yeah, the persona is silly, but the fighters seem delighted by it!

In practically every interview of his I've seen, the fighters are at ease, they're smiling, possibly even laughing. This makes me indirectly like the Schmo, just because the fighters like him. Let them have a bit of fun. Apart for this, I would just be neutral towards him. But on balance his comedy style of interviewing is far more positive than negative.

Hell, even Dana seems to like the dude.

So what gives, Sherdoggers?
Why do you hate the guy who the fighters like?

He should have convinced Helen Yee to give up on swimming forever and keep the DDs

Dont know if he is hated.
Seems to be a decent dude who loves the sport and big fake tits.
Whats not to love.

Eh, social media hates people that make a living doing jobs they think they can do, but can't.

The Schmo looks really silly and has a silly name, but so what?

Personally I don't really watch any MMA podcasts and very few interviews. I'd rather read about the news and such, so I probably end up consuming Schmo-generated content without having to watch him.

I don't think journalists should be a persona and if you are going to pick one, don't pick such an annoying character. I would prefer him ask the same questions, build the same relationships and share the same insights without the character. I think he is the wrong direction in content production.

I'm not a fan, but I don't hate the guy. Consider all of the MANY websites dedicated to MMA and combat sports in general, and then all of the journalists that write for each one. That doesn't even include the podcasts. There are so many guys to follow that to hate on guy is unnecessary; just pick another out of the dozens of them to follow. The Schmo has his shtick, so leave him be.

Except Schaub. He can be hated.

I must be different, I like the guy and don't like most MMA journalists.

The schmuck tried to step away from his annoying gimmick and failed. He's an unfunny, annoying clown.

I don’t think he’d get the same honest replies if he just played it straight. So there’s that.

I honestly think less of someone if they genuinely watch the Schmo's content regularly and they are above 20 years old.

I think he was mostly liked initially, but people turned on him fairly quickly. Probably doesnt help that hes a shameless Nardwuar rip off.

I hate The Schmo purely out of jealousy. His wife's bangin'. Other than that, I like the guy. Took that goofy personality and ran with it. In a field where so many take too seriously or cry about everything, he has fun with his job.

No one hates the guy. We just don't pay any attention to him.

Oh look there's the guy with the glasses and the silly voice. Guess it's time to take a shit. That sort of thing.

Do you find the persona disarming for the fighters? Why do you think the replies are more honest? I never considered this as a possibility and frankly, I don't see why it would be, but I don't watch his interviews so I wouldn't really know.

Yes, that’s exactly what I’ve posted several times. His schtick disarms or puts the fighters at ease. He asks good questions and I believe receives pretty truthful replies.

It’s like the show Hot Ones. They feed celebs increasingly hot chicken wings, and that totally drops the false fronts some of these people live behind. Just being honest seems like a good idea at the time. And again the host Sean Evans is a great interviewer.

Id rather watch Hot Ones or a Schmo interview than any other cookie cutter question, guarded answer interview. I look past the schtick while admiring the effect it has. I’ve seen clips of him as just “Dave” on his podcast with Helen. He’s like every other lame mma Internet personality. No thanks.

I'm a fan of Hot Ones or Tacos Con Todos. And using the shtick to disarm provides a better reason than I believed existed, but I still really dislike the character. Andin terms of lame personalities, I'd prefer if his entertainment value came from insights and where he could lead a interview vs. personality. But then again we come back to the ability to disarm and therefore kinda does that.

In the end, it still rubs me the wrong way, I can't help it.

I can’t tell you who you choose to like or not. I’m just saying I can see past it and appreciate the results. At the end of the day one really good question and an honest answer is worth 20 mins to me. I can’t be arsed to watch media week interviews.

Much like Nardwuar the Human Serviette, he is actually a good journalist who has a good rapport with his subjects

He does his homework and comes into the interview with the intention of helping fighters tell their story and show their perspective

Fighters like a journalist who acts like a fan making them look good, as opposed to a TMZ-style journalist always digging for dirt and drama

He only turns on the Schmo schtick when the camera is rolling during the interview (also similar to Nardwuar) which would catch people off-guard when they hadn't heard of him before and would be hard not to laugh at.
