Schaub: NBA guys will dominate in the UFC

No. For two reasons:

1. Getting punched in the face is not for everyone. Very few people have the mentality it takes to eat shots and keep coming for more. The vast majority of ball sports athletes would want nothing to do with that.

2. Being elite at one sport does not translate to being elite in a completely different sport. It’s not a question of training. Most people (NBA players included) are just not wired to become brilliant strikers and/or grapplers.

I doubt it.

Cowboy trained with Blake Griffin and said that he was an incredible athlete but extremely uncoordinated when it came to throwing punches.

He said it took him a really long time to learn how to throw a simple cross or 1-2.

This is typical, and anyone who has spent time in a boxing, or kickfighting gym knows this.

All the guys fantasizing about ball players ‘dominating’ combat sport are either complete ring virgins or have a Schaub-level mental handicap.

220 is well above the average nhl players and the most skilled are generally 200 pounds. And thats a very physical team sport, probably the most physical and closest to mma.

Rugby is much closer, its basically team grappling. And the AVERAGE weight there is like 230-240 with plenty of guys well over the 265 HW limit.

Oh, I'm definitely speaking in hypotheticals. There's reasons why things are as they are.
If paydays were reversed, though... maybe? lol

If paydays were reversed we might see a slight uptick in athleticism. But at the end of the day, most people simply prefer to not fight; even if there's money involved. It takes a certain kind of person to be a fighter. Most athletes aren't built for that life. Realistically, a D1 player could potentially make more money in fighting. But they'd rather play basketball for less money.

Ok, then you tell me. Where are these A-level athlete NBA players that would transition into fighting at an elite level? Have you ever seen a brawl in the NBA? NONE of those guys can fight. How many NBA players have transitioned into MMA? Boxing? These guys are fucking soft and awkward and have zero handspeed. They are not fighters nor do they possess or show any signs whatsoever of natural talent for combat sports. Running and jumping is not fighting. If that's the metric we use to determine if an athlete is made for fighting, then forget the NBA and start pulling triathletes and track stars. Those guys shit all over the NBA players when it comes to running and jumping. A high vertical doesn't mean a goddamn thing. What is A level NBA guy gonna do? Jump over punches and kicks like a fucking Street Fighter character? Half of the guys that are in the NBA aren't even good at the skill part of Basketball.

My goodness. The complete lack of handspeed alone would see most of those babies getting dropped by guys considerably smaller.

Nobody, NOBODY gave a fucking shit or was intimidated by the Basketball players when I was in High School. Wrestlers and to a lesser extent, Football players, you didn't fuck with those guys.

Too much cardio needed and consistent bursts of speed & changes of direction.

Fighting is different though. Being 6'6, 300lbs in a sport where you are supposed to fuck someone up into unconsciousness is pretty advantageous.

If the cage was small maybe. But the ufc cage is huge and a good 230 lbs fighter that is faster and has better cardio should get the edge once the bigger guy starts to fade, which is by the end of first round.

it doesnt matter.

You know how many nfl guys have a background in wrestling? wreslting is good for american football.

Jones older brother is state wrestling champ and captain of his high school wrestling team, he was more accomplished than Jones as a wrestler in high school while playing football.

At the end of the day its doesnt matter, cuz MMA not only lacks money, but also popularity.

golf >>>> combat sports

Why do americans think that the best athletes are 6'6+ 300 pounds? This such a load of shit.

Why isn't there a single 6'6+ 300 pounds guy dominating europeon football or hockey?

Maybe because being big and tall isn't suited for every sports?

Most big NBA "A class athletes" wouldn't be succesful in mma. They would either gas, wouldn't take punches well, have slow punches and kicks or do push punches instead of snapping punches.

Size is so overrated at HW. At one point size is just a disadvantage.
People seem to not understand American sports
265 is huge for the NBA
subtract centers and most guys are 200 - 240 on a good day, and they play an endurance sport. They're tall because the sport itself selects for height - but they're all undeniably great athtletes. When people who are actually informed make the the argument that they are "A-level" is because the way that the NBA works is that almost tliterally everyone who can play in the NBA in America does. And there's only 160 of them who start on teams. So the pool is filtered down to only the best of the best.

Similar with the NFL, though there are more players, but even with that the guys who are 6'6 275 and considered great athletets are rare. And the ones who are that big and play on the line (300+ pound players) are not people that even the most die hard NFL fan would consider to be someone who isn't uniquely suitetd as an athlete pretty much only for MMA.

Schaub is speaking broadly and in hyperbolic fashion, because that's what the does. But "American's" don't think like you're saying unless they're stupid. The only reason why people who watch the NBA and MMA wonder what LeBron would have looked like if he choose MMA is because LeBron James is literally one of the 10 best athletes to ever compete in a sport that selects out for the type of athleticism that would be interesting in MMA.

These conversations always go off the rails though.
The entire idea of A-level athletes beyond the meme is just to say that some people are more athletic than others, and at the top of every sport because of nature of sports, you find the best of the best EXCEPT perhaps in MMA where A) It may not be as important and B) The talent pool isn't big and C) There is no real selection filter until you make it to the UFC.

tl:dr

basketball has 500 million - 1 billion players ... even if 0.001% of basketballers could make it to the elite, that would be more than enough.

There are 3000-3500 active pro mma fighters (worldwide)

LOLOL

For the 100000000000th time being a great athlete does not equal a great fighter.. Yes it helps just like being tall helps at basketball but ive met a ton of tall stiffs than cant do shit on the court..

Not sure an NBA star will ever actually fight.. they get paid VERY well in that league.

Reviving Schaub threads should be a bannable offense. Stop talking about this dork already.

Somebody get him a net so he can finally catch that butterfly.

Smh 2019 and were still having this discussion. Athletes don't always translate into good fighters. There's no amount of muscle that can get you comfortable get hit in the face.
