American politics affect the world far more than any other country's. If we were isolationist or much smaller I could understand the sentiment, but there is a serious interest in our affairs and I can't blame other countries- particularly SA considering their ever-less-certain place in the world- for trying to influence our policy. Either way, various Saudi interests are intimately familiar with both candidates this time around, so there isn't any avoiding it. Trump's talk against the Saudis is transparent bullshit (nukes, anyone?) and we know where Clinton stands (Assad). The most we can hope for is that Clinton will realize that we don't need bff status with SA anymore, and Obama is doing a good job laying the groundwork for that.

The reason is simple, the Saudis were never strong to begin with, Stalin is strong.

When you are strong to a point where even high ranking officers fear you, you can have a decent fighting force.

Saddam managed to do that for example. He could had conquered all of the Arabian peninsula.

What is strong? You are oversimplifying things if you think the level of fear a tyrant wields is the key to their success. Stalin had a totalitarian system with him as a central figure. With the right staff support that could be the right ingredients for a decent military. Additionally the soviets had to get bloodied before they got their shit together. They had the luxury of vast land and manpower which gave them enough time for their military to gain experience and reform before they were taken over.

By contrast the Saudis are a royal family with literally thousands of members who get what they want through clientelism. This prevents any sort of cohesion or centralization within their military. The Saudis also could not take a horrific loss like the Soviets in the Winter War without terrible political cost.
