anyone know how sambo works with their belts? i seen fedor wearing a blue belt in that sambo video. just wondering if their is a belt system or what?

AFAIK, there are no belts in sambo. But I don't do it, so can anyone confirm it? I think there are ranks, but not colored belts.

The blue belt might have been for identification for the judges, like the green and yellow in bjj.

No belt rankings.

If you wear a blue kurtka (jaket) you wear a blue belt, red kurtka red belt.

If your really good you beacome a 'Master of Sport'.

Is the choice of kurtka down to the player?

Every athlete muct bring a blue and red kurtka to an event - with matching belt. That is all it is...color for the judges. There is no "rank" or color belt system...just like there is no rank in wrestling for example. Many schools do have in house ranks but that's all they are. There have been attempts to establish formal ranks but, they were not accepted well. Competative athletes get ratings based on national and international tournament wins - candidate for master of sport, master of sport, merited master of sport, honored master of sport are examples. These are also given to coaches for caoching achievements. But, these are not "ranks" as understood in asian martial arts.

Thanks for that. It was very informative. I've been interested in sambo ever since I read about it first in Black Belt magazine. Never knew it even existed until then. I'm taking judo, now. Not too many sambo schools around here, but I did see an instructional DVD set in an ad in Grappling magazine, and was kind of interested.

Sambo Steve is right! But some people claim to be a "blackbelt" in Sambo. That is fucking hilarious. Some guys have even been known to start their own "federation" and make up their own belt systems and give themselves rank!

I know a guy who runs a sambo school. It's mostly young kids... He has different color belts to signify rank, and a requirement to receive your white belt is to know them in order, even though everything I've seen indicates there are no belts. You're a no belt until then...He probably does it to give the kids something to work toward, but it's kinda weird...
