Trump delivered remarks from the Oval Office and signed a Safe Third asylum agreement with Guatemala. Trump said the United States could solve the border crisis faster with cooperation from the Democrats

Absolutely. Combined with the executive order earlier this week, it will hopefully put a damper on these caravans liberals love so much.

Do we have a word on whether or not this is legal, considering it seems specious to label Guatemala as a safe country for asylum?

Likely depends which group, and their judges, you ask.

There was a strong group here (Canada) arguing that the Safe Third Country agreement we had with the US was null because of the election of Trump.

Following this logic, wouldn't the entirety of Guatemala qualify for asylum in the US?

No. Qualification as a safe enough country for asylum isn't the same thing as that country having conditions so bad, they all have to come here. Many do, though.

Well, to be fair, there is quite a gulf between Canadian hyperbole over Trump and Guatemala not being safe for refugees.

Pray tell what's the difference. If the country is too dangerous to be safe in, surely the danger must be immense, probably proportional to poverty. How many Guatemalans do you think should qualify for US asylum? 17.5 mill Guatemalans, ~80% in poverty in danger at all times. That's about 14 million.

This means that if a migrant arrives in Guatemala before the US, they have to apply for asylum there and cannot travel onwards to the US.

It won’t stop the flow of migrants, but it will make it a lot easier to reject asylum claims from migrants who are coming south of Guatemala.

Trump announces ‘landmark agreement’ with Guatemala to restrict asylum claims

President Trump on Friday announced a so-called "safe third country" deal with Guatemala to restrict asylum claims to the United States from Central America, calling it a “landmark agreement” and arguing it “will put the coyotes and smugglers out of business."

"We've long been working with Guatemala and now we can do it the right way," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, with Guatemalan interior minister Enrique Degenhart at his side.

Trump told reporters he believes “this will really help” with the situation at the border.

“This is a very big day,” he said.

The agreement would require migrants, including Salvadorans and Hondurans, who cross into Guatemala on their way to the U.S. to apply for protections in Guatemala instead of at the U.S. border. It could potentially ease the crush of migrants overwhelming the U.S. immigration system and hand Trump a concession he could herald as a win as he struggles to live up to his campaign promises on immigration.

The announcement comes after a court in California blocked Trump's most restrictive asylum effort to date, one that would effectively end protections at the southern border.

The two countries had been negotiating such an agreement for months, and Trump threatened Wednesday to place tariffs or other consequences on Guatemala if it didn't reach a deal.

It's not clear how the agreement will take effect. Guatemala's Constitutional Court has granted three injunctions preventing its government from entering into a deal without approval of the country's congress.

    >>> Wow. He's pulling out all the stops. Imagine if California wasn't blocking everything under the Sun that Trump does.

    Well-played, Mr. President. Well-Played. [IMG]

Absolutely, and if there is a portion of the society that doesn’t think the US is safe enough, then basically no country would be.
