My instructor went to a gym with a bunch of Russian dudes in the Sacramento area and he was showing me some of the Russian Sambo moves. Very interesting.

A lot of brutal small joint manipulations (or breaks I should say).

ANyone else who knows more about this or could recommend a good Russian Sambo video/book????:icon_surp

I bought used copies of Igor Yakimov VHS videos, one on leg-locks and the other one on armbars. The videos are good if you can get your mind pass his heavy accent and annoying intros. He starts everything from a throw then goes right to a submission. He plans it so when you get the throw the submission is there for you to take it. The throws are tricky but they resemble Judo so much. Maybe advanced Judo throws.

The submissions are nothing I haven't seen before in BJJ but again maybe BJJ have learned leg locks from other sports like Sambo. There is a little more emphases on calf and bicep crushes than I am used to in BJJ.

One thing I have not sees in these videos is any guard work or any mention to the word "guard". No technique to gain position on the ground, just throws to submissions. Reminds me of Erik Paulson's "Quick Kills" DVD.

Good Luck!

.

Yakimov's tapes are very good. I also highly recommend Sambo for Professionals by Kurinoy. It is a CD Rom - Best damn sambo instructional I've seen! You can pick it up on www.budovideos.com - along with my ankle and leg lock dvd ;)

You can also get a trial version of Sambo for Professionals for free at http://www.sambolessons.borec.ru/dou.php

For more info about sambo check out our website www.ussambo.com

Stephen (or anyone),
I know you may have been asked this question a hudreds of times before but can you tell us how Russian Sambo different than BJJ other than difference in rules (like chokes and stuff). Let's settle this once and for all :)

Are locks in Sambo different than BJJ? Positioning and other things. Pardon my ignorance but I have not gotten a satisfactory answer to this question yet. Also, I live in Austin, Texas. Is there a credible Sambo school in my area?

Thanks

.

Stephen, the Serbia highlight video clip is really nice. I especially liked the "getting shoved by guy 1 to leg locking guy 2" manuver. If I were guy 1 in that scenario, I'd run away after I saw my back-up getting pretzeled like that.

In my opinion everyone I see doing leg locks does them wrong. Even at the pro level on PPV I see a lot of room for improvement. The reason is most people dont practice them enough and no one learns how to do them right in the first place. Go train with someone like Gokar or Gene Lebell or Bas only then will you realise that everything you knew about leg locks was shit.

The simple answer is practice, practice, practice...like stated above. I agree about most of the leg locks I see done in shows, tournies, etc. By the way, I address the ankle lock question in an interview on www.budovideos.com this month.

I would add however, that a leg lock is basically the same in judo, bjj, sambo, etc. The difference is not in the submission but, how one moves to set it up and gets to the position to pull it off. The major difference I find between BJJ and Sambo (I am no BJJ expert but have cross trained a bit), for example, is movement and positional in nature, not in the final submission. If people are focused on the submission only, it is misguided training and philosophy. without the movement and position, no submission will work.

I have worked with some judo guys and found the angles of attack a bit different as well. Lastly, in my experience in sambo and those other styles, another major difference is in how things are taught. Sambo has always been more akin to a wrestling team environment with constant drilling and no formality.

Thanks for the kind words about the clip. If I were Guy #1, I would run over and kick me in the head while I was locking Guy #2! LOL That clip was part of a drill to experiment movement possibilities after being pushed - go with the backward momentum. I would more likely hit guy #2 in the nuts and get back up to fight guy #1 :)

Check out my thread called "different grappling arts". There's basic information and a few links in it. I think the Sherdog store might have some tapes as well.

You can win a grappling match with only leglocks. People pretend leglocks don't exist, but trust me, that shit will ruin your day.
