Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to sell anti-aircraft missile systems S-400 "Triumph" China is actively interested in the possibility of their acquisition in 2011. Get new complexes Beijing could not earlier than 2016, because first of all should be satisfied the needs of the Russian Defense Ministry. In addition to the purchase of anti-aircraft systems themselves Chinese side insists on obtaining complete information about performance characteristics of the C-400. Meanwhile, before signing a firm contract Moscow and Beijing will need to agree the terms of sale of the complex to try to avoid copying the "triumph" of China.

Since the Ukraine crisis started, Putin has been looking to get China on his bandwagon to counter the expansion of NATO into Russia's backyard. Look at this deal in terms of geopolitics, not just as a simple military purchase. The only question is whether China will bite or keep on the sidelines.

Doesn't the SAM in question travel at over 2km/s??...

Once these things are in the air they're absolutely terrifying.

considering its a laser it would very easy to shoot down a missle

You think it could track it? In less than one second it has already moved out of the range in the video?

China and Russia teaming up to counter the West. We're pretty close to being back in a bipolar world.

Much of Chinese weapons tech came from the US though, through spying or back door deals.

Could be to sweeten the pot, but again, China REALLY doesn't give a shit about Russia. They want to be the first, or at the very least, second world power and Russia is a stepping stone they plan on walking over and leaving behind.

Yeah they get it from everywhere they can find it! Officially more from the Russians but unofficially who knows.

It is largely believed that China got it's nuclear weapon tech from the US and who knows what else.

http://www.cnn.com/US/9905/25/cox.report.02/

"China has been stealing America's most sensitive nuclear secrets "for at least the past several decades" and despite high-level knowledge of the thefts, security at U.S. nuclear labs still "does not meet even minimal standards," according to a congressional report released Tuesday. "

Also look at it this way. China is already the number 1 industrial power in the world, so technologically it would only be a matter of time before they catch up to Russia. In many cases, they have already leaped ahead. It is a wise move for Russia to make what profit it still can while bounding China on its bandwagon against the West.

You're making it seem like Russia is more or less giving up on being a super power and just giving the keys to China. That doesn't seem very Putinesque.

I think it was pretty much global policy makers who gave the keys to China.

What did they think was going to happen by stripping the West of manufacturing, training armies of Chinese in Western universities, and setting up massive trade deficits where China can reinvest in hard assets across the Western world.

Seems like a winning strategy..

Is that not what happened Mr. Gif?

Russia is a shell of the former USSR, a mere shadow of its former glory. Its industries have shrunk and the government is dependent on the sale of natural resources for income. As manufacturing is the driving force of innovation and technological advancement, Russia is falling badly behind. Russian manufacturing can't compete with Europe and North America in high end sectors, while getting killed by the Chinese on low end markets. China's economy is about 7 times larger than Russia's by PPP, and 5 times larger by nominal GDP. Short of a catastrophic collapse of Chinese economy, Russia is bound to get surpassed.

Putin has no way of reversing this trend, not to mention the Russian population decline. His greatest contribution to Russia was sorting out a bunch of in-fighting oligarchs into doing his bidding. He knows how to consolidate power and advance his goals, but he can't perform miracles. You can't be a superpower without the economic strength and population to back it.
